While President Barack Obama tries to convince Congress that military action against Syria is worth the risk, the American public doesn't seem to be too on board with the possibility. On Tuesday, a Washington Post-ABC News poll showed there is significant opposition to a missile strike in Syria, with 59 percent of Americans opposing the idea. A majority of both Democrats and Republicans oppose the proposal, and Obama's position on the matter doesn't seem to be a driving factor for support or opposition either way.

Wednesday marks Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish new year, and former U.S. Rep. Allen West is using the occassion to support Israel. West, a favorite of the tea party movement, has opened the door to a political comeback in 2016. For thousands of years, the shofar has called the Jewish people together for many reasons, including ushering in the new year, West posted on Facebook on Wednesday. On this Rosh Hashanah, I pray the shofar will not be needed to sound an alarm of war for the people of Israel.

When you're rich and righteous and "egged on by a witch hunt by the liberal Stuart News," you believe God wants you to "take" land. Apparently. Whatever you need. Take it. That's how it appears in Stuart, where hysteria so gripped the Stuart City Commission at its last meeting that it voted to ask government agencies to seize huge tracts of private land owned by sugar and agricultural farmers so it can be flooded to relieve estuary pollution.

On Tuesday, Gov. Rick Scott called swimmer Diana Nyad to congratulate her on completing her swim from Cuba to Florida. I thanked Diana today for making Florida a part of her historic milestone, Scott said. She is an inspiration for so many. I told her Florida was proud to be her monumental finish line yesterday. I also asked Diana to consider staying in Florida for a while and even calling our great state home again. Florida is home for many dreamers, entrepreneurs and those that continue to make history just like Diana.
