With the federal Veterans Affairs department under fire for problems with hospital management across the nation, including a well-publicized case in Phoenix where 40 veterans died waiting for care while the VA hospital altered lists to hide the long waiting time, Gov. Rick Scott weighed in on the matter on Monday. Scott, who served in the Navy, was involved in hospital management, including leading HCA/Colombia. Scott offered his take on VA Secretary Eric Shinsekis pledge for audits at all VA facilities.

A poll released by Rasmussen Reports on Monday finds a solid majority -- 57 percent -- of likely voters believe the Obama administrations handling of the IRS, including targeting tea party and conservative groups, needs more investigation. Only 28 percent say the matter should be wrapped up, while 15 percent are not sure. The poll of 1,000 likely voters was taken from May 9-10 and had a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.

Floridians shouldn't expect to pay sales tax in Florida from May 31-June 8 for hurricane prep items like generators, two-way radios and first-aid kits. On Monday, Gov. Rick Scott led theGovernors Hurricane Conference in Orlando and will be signing a bill to slash taxes. HB 5601 would create a series of tax holidays in the Sunshine State, including a break for hurricane supplies. According to Scott, the new bill will provide $105 million in tax cuts.

The U.S. House passed the Success and Opportunity through Quality Charter Schools Act on Friday which will expand charter school options. U.S. Rep. Dan Webster, R-Fla., a longtime supporter of school choice, voted for the bill and made the case for increased options in education.

In her role as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., is front-and-center against Republican efforts to investigate the Obama administrations handling of the September 2012 attacks in Benghazi which claimed the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. In various media appearances at the national level, Wasserman Schultz said the investigation, which includes a House committee, is about politics.

Toward the end of last week, U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., announced that he was sponsoring the House version of U.S. Sen. Mike Lees, R-Utah, bill to change college accreditation. Under the Higher Education Reform and Opportunity (HERO) Act proposed by Lee and DeSantis, states would be allowed to set up their own accreditation standards which would run parallel with current regional and national accreditation agencies.

Mother's Day is right around the corner, and U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla., chose a particularly odd way of celebrating it. In an email sent to supporters on Saturday, Frankel paid homage to her mother in commemoration of the holiday. "My mom, Dorothy, has always been an inspiration for me," wrote Frankel. "She instilled values of equality and justice in me from an early age -- values that I still carry with me in my work. She was the first to teach me to always stand up for what I believe in."

U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., introduced the Stop Punishing Innocent Taxpayers Act (HR 4491) on Friday. Buchanan, who sits on the Ways and Means Committee, insists his bill would stop the IRS from going after the relatives of Social Security recipients who received overpayments. The bill would restore a statute of limitations on federal debts to a 10-year period. Currently around 400,000 Americans who owe around $714 million from Social Security overpayments are being investigated by the federal government.
