Proposed Sale of Florida Gas Pipeline Ignites Antitrust Concerns
A proposed purchase of a natural gas conveyor could affect service to Central Florida and run afoul of antitrust regulations, Sunshine State News has learned.
The Williams Cos. is bidding to acquire Southern Union Co. Each firm owns natural-gas pipelines that serve Central Florida. If successful, Williams would have monopoly ownership of both pipes, reviving antitrust issues that were addressed in 2001.
Southern Union on Tuesday announced it would begin merger talks with Williams. Williams bid $39 a share for Southern on June 28.
Ander Crenshaw Looks to Cut Congressional Fat
From his perch on the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw looked to reduce the size and scope of the federal government this week by trimming some fat from Congress itself.
Crenshaw, a former president of the Florida Senate who has represented parts of the First Coast and the northern part of the state since first being elected to Congress back in 2000, used his position as chairman of the Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee to cut congressional expenses.

The Florida House now has two filed bills vying for the title of "Caylee's Law."
In the uproar and aftermath of Casey Anthony's acquittal last week in Orlando of the 2008 murder of her daughter, Caylee, Florida legislators were quick to announce their disgust. She did not report Caylee missing for more than one month, and was convicted of four counts of lying to investigators, but was released Wednesday for time served.

George LeMieux Backs Jeff Sessions' Senate Budget Tactic
Former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, now in a crowded Republican primary field to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, called on Wednesday for Senate Republicans to shut down passing appropriations bills until the Democratic-controlled Senate passes a budget.

Ron Paul Runs TV Ad in Iowa and New Hampshire
U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas unveiled his first television advertisement for his bid for the Republican presidential nomination and its a blockbuster -- actually an ad for a summer blockbuster. The ad, which is set as a preview for a movie, hammers Republicans for compromising too much in standing against raising the debt and promises that Paul will not back raising the debt ceiling. The ad is being run in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Last year, Floridas Agency for Workforce Innovation projected that Florida would gain 1.1 million jobs by 2017. It was noted that most of the projected job gains would simply be recouping the jobs lost from 2006 to 2009.

Mike Yost Bashes Corrine Brown in New Video
Businessman Mike Yost, the Republican nominee in 2010 who took on Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown who represents parts of North Florida, is hoping to challenge again in 2012. Yost seems to be a bit more professional this time in his campaign operations, as can be seen in a web video he unveiled earlier in the week. In the video, Yost attacks Brown, arguing that the district has lagged behind the rest of the state during her almost two decades in office.
