Florida Fight With EPA Backdrop to Congressional Debate

Pointing to a long-running fight in Florida, the U.S. House on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill that would restrict the Environmental Protection Agencys power to require tougher water-quality standards.

U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., was a key sponsor of the measure, which passed 239-184. Mica and other supporters said the EPA has overstepped its authority in Clean Water Act disputes with states.

EPA has indeed created a regulatory nightmare that affects almost every state in the union, Mica said during a floor debate.

Attention, Florida: Obama Ready to Go to War Over Water

The Obama administration reportedly has threatened to veto a bill that would shift regulatory power over water and wetlands to the states.

The Office of Management and Budget released a statement Tuesday saying the administration "strongly opposes" House Resolution 2018 "because it would significantly undermine the Clean Water Act and could adversely affect public health, the economy and the environment."

CNBC Ranks Florida 18th Best State for Business

A CNBC report has Florida ranked 18th (tied with Tennessee) among states as the best place to do business.

The report measured states based on 10 different criteria. Florida scored high marks on its work force (second overall), infrastructure and transportation (eighth) and access to capital (ninth), but scored poorly on its economy (47th) and cost of doing business (40th).
