Citizens' President Resigns, will Step Down in April

Scott Wallace, president and CEO of Citizens Property Insurance Corp., has announced his resignation, effective April 6.

Scott has led the company through a complex ramp-up of the infrastructure needed for Citizens to provide the services and possess the claims payment ability that is so essential to our states housing industry, Citizens chairman Carlos Lacasa stated in a release. His talents will be sorely missed.

Wallace, who has been with the state-backed Citizens for six years, informed Lacasa of his decision on Friday.

Redistricting Maps Pass House Committees

New maps for the Legislature and the state's congressional delegation passed three House panels on party-line votes Monday as the Senate Democratic leader unveiled her proposal for the once-a-decade redistricting process.

The House subcommittees tasked with drawing lines for the House and Congress each approved three alternatives for those plans, set to be considered by the House Redistricting Committee later this month. The subcommittee set up to address the Senate maps approved the upper chamber's working version of the plan.

Odds Grow Against Casino Bill Even as it Succeeds in Committee

A proposal to create a statewide gaming commission and allow voters to approve up to three mega casinos cleared its first hurdle Monday in the Florida Senate. However, the odds appear to have grown longer against the success of the bill.

The Senate Regulated Industries Committee voted 7-3 on Monday in support of the Destination Gaming bill.

Coalition Demands Hillsborough Schools Cut Off 'Hamas Entity'

Alleging that campus visits by a Muslim activist are "tantamount to advocating overturning the Constitution in favor of Sharia Law," a conservative coalition on Monday demanded that the Hillsborough County School District "sever all connections" to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

A letter signed by Conservative Theological University president Gene Youngblood and 14 others representing conservative educational and religious groups also "respectfully requested":

Casino, Gaming Commission Effort Clears First Senate Committee

The Senate Regulated Industries Committee voted 7-3 on Monday in support of the destination gaming bill that would create a statewide gaming commission, allow voters to approve up to three mega-casinos and regulate existing Internet cafes.

The bill, SB 710, next goes before the Senate Budget Committee. The following stop would be the Senate Rules Committee, which is chaired by Sen. John Thrasher, R-Jacksonville, who was one of three to vote against the bill on Monday.

Sens. Charles Dean, R-Inverness, and Thad Altman, R-Melbourne, also voted against the bill.

Tea Parties Split Over E-Verify, Diluting Prospects for Passage

Dozens of tea parties, including the state's largest, say they will support an E-Verify immigration bill at the 2012 Legislature.

But with some libertarian-leaning conservatives balking at the issue, the path to passage looks more precarious than ever.

"Most in the tea party are concerned about anything that is illegal and does not uphold the rule of law. E-Verify is one way to uphold our legal immigration laws and we support it," said Billie Tucker, who chairs the First Coast Tea Party in Jacksonville.

Negron Closes the Book on Asking Voters to Elect Education Commissioner

State Sen. Joe Negron, R-Stuart, has halted his effort to ask voters if they want to select the education commissioner and make the post once again part of the Florida Cabinet.

Instead, Negron said he wants to pursue a different constitutional amendment, this one to abolish the once-a-generation constitutional revision and the taxation and budget reform commissions.

As it stands right now, I do not intend to move forward, Negron said Monday. Im putting my energy into the revision commission.

CAIR Disavows Tampa Terror Suspect; Was There Entrapment?

The Florida Council of American-Islamic Relations on Monday disavowed any connection to a Pinellas Park man arrested on charges of plotting a terrorist attack in Tampa.

Federal agents said Sami Osmakac, 25, had a list of targets, including nightclubs in the Ybor City area, the Operations Center of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Ybor City and a business in the South Tampa area.
