In her commencement speech Monday night -- final one for a University of South Florida-Polytechnic graduating class -- Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, commended the class for its herculean efforts to halt the forced USF divorce.

The name of Sen. JD Alexander, R-Lake Wales, who could be considered the father of the new independent Florida Polytechnic University that will come into life July 1, was not included in Dockerys speech -- a speech that touched heavily on character and leadership.

Rick Scott Quietly Awaits FAMU Board's Response to Hazing Death Arrests

The governor appears to be biding his time with Florida A&M University.

Gov. Rick Scott said he isnt going to take any action over James H. Ammons, the FAMU president, until he sees how the FAMU board of trustees handles the leadership at the Tallahassee school now that 13 students were charged last week in the hazing death of a member of the famed Marching 100 band.

The board soundly rejected Scotts call for Ammons to be suspended in December while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the death of Robert Champion.

AAA: More Floridians are Making Summer Vacation Plans

Floridians plan to be hitting the road to take in the beach, an amusement park or see family members in greater numbers than last year, according to AAA.

A survey by AAA found that 65 percent of Floridians, up 8 percent from 2011, intend a summer vacation of four or more days from now until September.

Rick Scott: Steve MacNamara Has 'Done a Great Job'

Gov. Rick Scott defended Steve MacNamara, his embattled chief of staff, who has been the target of a recent rash of media stories that have gone so far as to call him the governors biggest failure.

Scott appeared to lightheartedly approach the topic with reporters outside the Capitol after the Florida State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police hosted the 2012 Florida State Law Enforcement Memorial on Monday.

Scott told the reporters they are being mean to poor Steve MacNamara.

Richard Burr Backs deFaria to Contest Debbie Wasserman Schultz

While he has represented North Carolina in Washington since winning a congressional seat in the 1994 election cycle and moved up to the Senate a decade later, Richard Burr has not had the high profile of some recent legislators from the Tarheel State like Jesse Helms, John Edwards and even Heath Shuler who had more success in Washington as a congressman than he ever did as quarterback for the Redskins.

Herman Cain Continues to Flex His Political Muscles in Florida

During his bid for the Republican presidential nomination earlier in the 2012 election cycle, businessman Herman Cain scored his greatest success when he won the Presidency 5 straw poll held by the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) in Orlando back in September. While Cain -- unlike all other previous winners of the straw poll -- did not go on to win the Republican nomination, he is continuing to play an active role in the politics of the Sunshine State.

Rick Scott to Again Sign No-Fault Auto Insurance Reform Bill

Gov. Rick Scott will be in West Palm Beach Monday for a ceremonial signing of House Bill 119, the revamping of the states personal injury protection auto insurance coverage.

Scott signed the bill on Friday, holding a ceremony at the Florida State College, Law Enforcement Training/Criminal Justice Center in Jacksonville.

The law, which goes into place July 1, is designed to slow the rapid rise of the most affordable auto insurance in Florida.
