State Seeks Changes in Medically Needy Program

Florida Medicaid officials have asked the federal government to approve major changes in a program that serves tens of thousands of people with costly medical conditions, seeking to install a type of managed care and requiring monthly premium payments.

The Agency for Health Care Administration, carrying out a 2011 law, requested changes in the state's Medically Needy program. In a document sent to the federal government in late April, the agency said the proposed changes would improve care for beneficiaries.

This week, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania offered his endorsement to the man who appears to have beaten him out for the Republican presidential nomination -- former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.

Santorum, who came out of nowhere to win contests in 11 states to emerge as the chief conservative opponent for Romney, sent out a message to supporters late on Monday in which he backed Romney -- but let his supporters know that he and Romney continued to have differences.

Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff Backs George LeMieux in U.S. Senate Campaign

State Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale, has endorsed George LeMieux to be the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, according to a statement from LeMieux's camp on Tuesday.

After nearly 20 years of friendship, today I am excited to endorse George LeMieux in his bid for U.S. Senate, Bogdanoff stated in a release.

Herman Cain Adds Ozzie deFaria to His 'Army of Davids'

Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain continues to remain politically active in Florida. On Tuesday, Cain added businessman Ozzie deFaria, who is running in the crowded Republican primary field looking to topple Democrat incumbent U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to his Army of Davids -- candidates who agree with Cain on tax reform, namely the 9-9-9 plan. Conservative activist Joe Kaufman, who is also running in the GOP primary, was added to the Army of Davids earlier in the month.

Florida stands to pick up nearly $5 million for future consumer protection efforts from a multistate and federal settlement with Abbott Laboratories over improperly misbranding the anti-seizure drug Depakote, the state attorney general's office announced.

Karen Harrington Gets Support of Pro-Life Group

Businesswoman Karen Harrington, who was the Republican nominee that lost out to U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., in 2010 and is angling for a rematch in 2012, announced on Tuesday that she had won the backing of the Susan B. Anthony List, an organization that backs pro-life candidates.
