Florida to Hold First High School Astronaut Challenge

High school students will compete in the first-ever State of Florida Astronaut Challenge on Saturday at the Challenger Learning Center in Tallahassee, the state Department of Education announced.

High school students from across the state will participate in the STEM-focused competition designed to test their knowledge of space shuttle operations, engineering, launch, orbit and landing of the space shuttle Enterprise flight simulator.

Rick Scott Orders Flags Lowered for Former Fort Myers Mayor Corbin

Gov. Rick Scott has ordered flags lowered to half-staff at the City Hall of Fort Myers on Saturday for Oscar M. Corbin Jr., the former mayor of Fort Myers. Corbin, 94, died May 8.

Corbin served as mayor from 1967-'76.The city hall has been named after him.

Corbin also fought for civil rights of all residents during the 1960s and 1970s -- a time when it was unpopular to do so, according to the Fort Myers News-Press.

Jeff Atwater: Arson Ring Used Renters to Make False Claims

Twenty people in South Florida have been charged aspart of a criminal ring accused of making false insurance claims after torching rental homes, declared the state fire marshals office, state attorneys office in Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater (the fire marshals office is under Atwater) announced the arrests as part of his weekly roundup on Friday.

Bill Posey Offers Federal Contracting Conference in Melbourne

U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge, will host a federal contracting conference at the Womens Business Center at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne on Monday and Tuesday.

Poseys office advises business leaders currently doing business with the federal government to register for Mondays discussion, while those not engaged in business with the federal government, but hoping to do so, to register to attend on Tuesday.

Senators Act to Block Hikes to Veterans' Tricare Health Care Costs

A bipartisan effort to stave off President Obamas plan to boost health-care premiums for certain active and retired military personnel has been introduced by U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Miami, and Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.

The Senate bill came as a separate effort to roll back the fee increases to the military's health care system, Tricare, as approved by the House on Friday as part of the $643 billion National Defense Authorization Act.

The vote was 299 to 120, with 16 Republicans joining the opposition and 77 Democrats voting in favor.

Dave Weldon Enters GOP Contest to Take on Bill Nelson

On Friday, former U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon announced that he is going to enter the Republican primary to challenge Democrat incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.

Weldon unveiled a video on Friday in which he announced his plans to enter the Senate contest with less than three months to go until the primary in August. He faces major opposition in the form of former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, U.S. Rep. Connie Mack and retired Army officer and businessman Mike McCalister who took more than 10 percent of the Republican gubernatorial primary back in 2010.

On Friday, former U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon announced that he was going to enter the Republican primary to challenge Democrat incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.
