State Regulators Working to Patch PIP Reform Loophole

Insurance regulators have been working for a couple of weeks to fix glitches in the states reformed auto insurance law the same glitches a Democratic lawmaker pointed out to the governor in a letter on Monday.

The state Agency for Health Care Administration, which oversees licensing medical providers to provide PIP coverage, released a three-page memo earlier this month that acknowledged the mistake and -- in the view of the agency -- has deemed the later date as the start date.

The changes on paper become law July 1.

Naples Hunter Pleads Guilty to Killing Florida Panther

Todd Alan Benfield, 45, of Naples, pled guilty Monday to shooting and killing a Florida panther, in violation of the Endangered Species Act, U.S. Attorney Robert E. O'Neill announced.

Benfield faces a maximum penalty of one year in federal prison, a fine of up to $100,000, and forfeiture of weapons and other equipment used to kill the animal.

The Endangered Species Act makes it a federal Class A misdemeanor to knowingly take an endangered species of wildlife.

A subspecies of puma, there are an estimated 100 to 160 panthers in South Florida.

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham is voicing his choice for GOP vice presidential candidate loud and clear.

Rick Scott Begins Mission in Spain with Country Briefing


Gov. Rick Scott began his Monday at 12:30 p.m. Central European Summertime in Spain -- there is a six-hour time difference with EDT -- with a country briefing by the U.S. Embassy at the Westin Palace Madrid Hotel in Madrid.

Scott is heading a business development mission to Spain this week with Enterprise Florida.The 60-strong delegation left for Spain Sunday night.

Alberto, First Storm of Hurricane Season, No Threat to Florida

Just as a reminder that the hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and that nature doesnt follow the calendar, the seasons first named storm, Tropical Storm Alberto, has formed off Georgia.

The storm isnt expected to impact Florida or even Georgia, other than to create some better surfing conditions. The National Hurricane Center forecasts the storm, with sustained winds of 40 mph at 5 a.m. Monday, will remain offshore, moving northeast into the open Atlantic.

AAA Predicts Further Gas Price Declines for Memorial Day

It may seem strange to read, but $3.54 for a gallon of gas is considered a Memorial Day weekend relief for motorists.

A week before the three-day weekend, gas prices were down 8 cents a gallon from a week earlier on average in Florida, 35 cents below a month earlier, according to AAA.

The mark is 14 cents below the national average of $3.68.

AAA predicts the prices will continue to retreat this week as 30.7 million Americans hit the roads in their cars for the holiday -- more may be expected.
