Did Senate Staffer's Emails Breach Separation of Campaign and State?

Email exchanges concerning congressional candidate Al Lawson's campaign have raised questions about political involvement within the state Senate Minority Office.

The April 9 emails from and to staff director Theresa Frederick discussed Lawson and his Democratic and Republican opponents.

In the first email, posted at 6:06 a.m. that Monday, Frederick thanks a correspondent for "the info on Jay Liles" [a Democratic primary opponent of Lawson's].It is always helpful toknow what the opposition is up to."

In a straw poll conducted by the Hillsborough County Republican Party, none of the justices facing statewide retention votes in November garnered even close to the simple majority required. The results were these:

Don Gaetz Gathers Policy Advisers for Senate President's Office

Senate President-designate Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, has already snagged three big names from inside the capital circle to help run his office through the 2013 and 2014 legislative sessions.

Lisa Vickers, who recently stepped down as director of the Florida Department of Revenue, has been hired to be Gaetzs senior adviser. Carol Gormley, who previously worked for former Gov. Jeb Bush, is coming over from the House where she was staff director for the Health and Human Services Committee.She will serve as senior policy advisory on health care for Gaetz.

John Hitt of UCF Tops Florida's University Presidents Pay List

The presidents of eight of Floridas public universities combined to make more than $4 million in the 2010-2011 school year, according to the journal The Chronicle of Higher Education.

John Hitt, University of Central Florida president, was atop the list at $741,500, which made him the ninth highest paid public school president in the nation, in the journal's analysis of 190 institutions and universities.

Marco Rubio, Mark Warner, Others Team to Bolster STEM Start-ups

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Miami, has teamed with Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., and others in an unlikely Washington alliance that seeks to expand on the Jobs Act signed into law earlier this year.

The Startup Act 2.0, a proposal by Rubio, Warner, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., and Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., is intended to aid new businesses, with an emphasis on those involving science, technology, engineering and math, as a means to boost the economy.

Ric Keller Endorses Craig Miller for Congress

Former U.S. Rep. Ric Keller announced on Tuesday that he is backing restaurant executive Craig Miller who is running in a crowded Republican primary for the new congressional seat stretching on the Atlantic Coast south of Jacksonville to Daytona Beach.

"Im pleased to endorse Craig Miller, Keller said in a statement. Hes a conservative leader who knows how to create jobs and cut wasteful spending. Hell make a great congressman. We need him in Washington to stand up against Obamas reckless spending and liberal agenda.
