John Legg Gets the Backing of the FMA for Senate Bid

With Sen. Jim Norman, R-Tampa, ending his bid for re-election earlier in the week, House Speaker Pro Tempore John Legg, R-New Port Richey, has been garnering endorsements in the race to represent parts of Pasco and Hillsborough counties in the Senate.

After reeling in the support of many of the leaders of the Senate on Thursday, Legg garnered the backing of the Florida Medical Associations (FMA) PAC on Friday.

Scott to Growers: E-Verify Would Be Foolish

Gov. Rick Scott, who said while campaigning for governor that he would require employers to use the federal E-Verify system to check immigration status, now acknowledges that requiring the agriculture industry to use it would put growers at a disadvantage.

Scott said this week while addressing a gathering of the state's largest citrus growers group, Florida Citrus Mutual, that he wouldn't support any effort to require use of the system in the upcoming legislative year. Lawmakers have considered requiring its use, but failed to pass legislation the last two years.

Rick Scott Signs Bills Pushing Global Trade Port, Transit Projects

Gov. Rick Scott, who has been a champion of building up Floridas port system in anticipation of capturing the growth in maritime trade, held a ceremonial signing of two transportation-related bills while at Port Miami on Thursday.

Well over 1 million Florida jobs rely on international business, and along with international investment it accounted for about one-sixth of Floridas economy last year, Scott stated in a release while attending the Breaking Down Barriers to International Trade Forum hosted by the World Trade Center Miami.

Florida Power & Light Co.'s proposed $690 million-a-year rate increase, adding 16 percent to the current base rate, will be vigorously opposed by the Florida Office of Public Counsel and a conservative group.

With a series of nine public hearings set to conclude by month's end, J.R. Kelly sees "no way" FPL's full request is valid, and if past is prologue, the Public Service Commission will chop the utility's rate bid significantly.

U.S. Senate Rejects AIF-Opposed Legislation Harmful to Florida Farmers

The U.S. Senate voted 50-46 to table an amendment backed by a group of sugar users that would have phased out the federal sugar program, comprised of marketing allotments and import restrictions.

Associated Industries of Florida took action against the legislation it deemed harmful to one of Floridas largest industries.

The states premier business lobby group urged members of Congress to oppose the amendment to the 2012 Farm Bill, saying Florida sugar farmers provide 12,311 jobs and $3.3 billion of economic activity in the state.
