Jeff Atwater Backs Tom Lee Over Rachel Burgin

Former Senate President Tom Lee continues to gain the backing of the Republican leadership for his return to Tallahassee. While Lee faces Rep. Rachel Burgin, R-Tampa, in the Republican primary for a state Senate seat, a host of prominent GOP leaders continue to endorse him. On Monday, state CFO Jeff Atwater, who served as Senate president himself before running for his current post in 2010, announced that he was backing Lee.

Ron Paul Focuses on Adding Delegates for GOP Convention in Tampa

While former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts has won enough delegates in the primaries and caucuses to claim the Republican presidential nomination, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, continues to pick up delegates for when the GOP holds its convention in Tampa come August.

Paul picked up 21 out of 25 delegates up for grabs at conventions in Iowa over the weekend. Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who nosed out Romney to win more popular votes than any of the other candidates in Iowa, pulled out of the race earlier in the election cycle.

Ground Issue Pushes Atlas Launch to Wednesday

An environmental control system duct problem has delayed, until Wednesday, the planned Monday launch of an Atlas 5 rocket, carrying a classified National Reconnaissance Office payload, from Cape Canaveral.

The duct in the ground equipment required the 19-story rocket to be rolled back to the assembly hangar.

The window is now between 8:28 to 9:27 a.m. (EDT) on Wednesday.

'Angry' Money Gives Funding Edge to GOP and Romney

There has been a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth as, in the spring, it appeared that forces supporting Mitt Romney would be able to raise about as much money as those supporting Barack Obama. There's even more now that it seems likely that the pro-Romney side will raise and spend more money than the pro-Obama side.

Rick Scott Heading to Cattle Country for 10th ‘Work’ Day

Gov. Rick Scott will be out on a ranch for his 10th Lets Get to Work day on Monday.

In order to highlight the economic impact of Floridas cattle industry, Scott will spend the day with Williamson Cattle Co. in Okeechobee, according to a release from his office.

Scott will be working with cattle and at a livestock auction, as he is also scheduled to be at the Okeechobee Livestock Market during the day.

Lisa Edgar, 20 Others Seek PSC Post

Lisa Edgar, the longest-serving member of the Florida Public Service Commission, is seeking another term --- but will face competition from 20 other candidates who range from business people and government officials to a former lawmaker.

With her current term ending Jan. 1, Edgar met a deadline last week to apply for reappointment to the $130,000-a-year job as one of the state's top utility regulators. The applications by Edgar and the other candidates touch off a months-long process that will end with Gov. Rick Scott choosing one of them to serve on the five-member PSC.

Jack Latvala Says He Has Votes for 2016 Presidency; John Thrasher Out

On the same day Sen. John Thrasher made it official that he will not run for the Senate presidency in 2016, Sen. Jack Latvala said he believes he has rounded up enough support to claim the office, barring too many losses in this year's elections.

Latvala, R-Clearwater, did not specify how many pledge cards he had collected from members of the Senate's GOP caucus, which will decide who will serve as president unless Democrats seize control of the chamber in this year's elections, 2014 or 2016.
