Tropical Storm Debby Reduced Wildfire Risk in Florida

A positive from the heavy rains that poured across Florida from this weeks lingering visit of Tropical Storm Debby is that the threat of wildfires has diminished.

Still, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam cautions people to be responsible while celebrating the Independence Day holiday.

Every year, Americans celebrate the independence of our nation and the sacrifices of those who fight to keep us free, Putnam stated in a release. Fireworks are an integral and historical part of those celebrations; however, fire safety is everyones responsibility.

Ron Paul Campaign and Supporters Ready for Dueling Events in Tampa

U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, plans to end his bid for the Republican presidential nomination with an event in Tampa on the eve of the Republican National Convention in August.

While Paul will bring around 200 delegates to the convention, he is not expected to speak or to endorse former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, who is expected to be nominated in Tampa.

Paul will be speaking in Tampa on Sunday, Aug. 26, at the University of South Floridas Sun Dome in Tampa.

Florida Chamber: Court Obamacare Ruling Doesn't End Uncertainty for Small Businesses

Mark Wilson, Florida Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, said the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that keeps mandates in place making people pay for health care coverage will harm Americas long-term global competitiveness.

But he also said the continued squabbling in Washington, D.C., over health care has caused many businesses to hold back on their plans for hiring and expansion because of the uncertainty on where health coverage is headed. And in many cases, employers are considering ending employer-based insurance plans because of the cost.

Rick Scott Tabs Craig Nichols to Head Management Services

Craig J. Nichols, a human resources business executive with three decades of experience, was named Friday to be the next secretary of the Department of Management Services -- the state's human resources department -- by Gov. Rick Scott.

Nichols replaces Jack Miles who resigned from the $140,000-a-year post at the end of March.

Miles, appointed by Scott in January 2011, has said he promised Scott he would serve for the governors first two legislative sessions.

Florida Gulf Coast U Denied Appeal on 12 Percent Tuition Hike

The Florida Board of Governors Tuition Appeals Committee has unanimously rejected Florida Gulf Coast Universitys request to reconsiderreceiving only a 12 percent tuition hike.

The Fort Myers-based state university had asked for a 14 percent increase.

In a day dominated by partisanship, it should be no surprise that the divide continued between the lines -- the foul lines -- last night for members of Congress.

Florida Congressmen Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta, Dennis Ross, R-Lakeland, and Daniel Webster, R-Orlando, all suited up for the GOP in the annual CQ-Roll Call congressional baseball game, held at Nationals Park.

During his time as attorney general of Florida, Bill McCollum boosted the state's efforts to fight child predators and developed a law enforcement strategy to reduce gang violence.

But on the issue that would have set his legacy in the nation's legal history, McCollum came up just short this week when the U.S. Supreme Court narrowly rejected his argument that the nation's new health care law was unconstitutional.
