25 Reasons NOT to Take Federal Dollars to Expand Medicaid

The Florida Legislature opened a special session Monday to decide on the state budget and debate how Florida should move forward in regard to our health care future. The Senate offered a plan that supporters, including many business interests, sugarcoated in conservative buzzwords such as "a free-market approach," even though the plan is anything but. As we say here at The James Madison Institute, pro-business isn't always pro-free market. 

JMI Makes the Case Against Medicaid Expansion

The Florida Legislature has been in special session this week, trying to break a logjam over the budget and Medicaid expansion. The House, which opposes Medicaid expansion, received some intellectual reinforcements on Thursday as the James Madison Institute (JMI), a think tank offering free-market solutions, issued “25 Reasons Not to Take Federal Dollars to Expand Medicaid.”

Tom Rooney: Higher FBI Budget Will Help Against Terrorism

From his perch as the chairman of the U.S. House Emerging Threats Subcommittee, U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., said on Thursday that the Commerce, Justice and Science (CJS) Appropriations bill will help keep America safer as it adds more than $163 million to the FBI budget.

Vern Buchanan, Ted Deutch Crack Down on Fraud Targeting Seniors

Two Florida congressmen -- Republican Vern Buchanan and Democrat Ted Deutch -- teamed up on Thursday to unveil the “Seniors Fraud Prevention Act” which cracks down on bogus sweepstakes and other scams targeting seniors. 

The proposal, which also is backed by U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., would set up an office in the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Affairs to tackle new reports of scams directed at seniors. 

Watch Out, Jeb! Rick Perry's Using George W. Bush's Playbook

Former Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, launched a second bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday and that could spell bad news for former Gov. Jeb Bush, R-Fla. 

As he’s been going around the nation, specifically focusing on Iowa, Perry has tried to present a different image than he did during his 2012 bid. The media have mostly focused on Perry’s glasses but the changes in the former Texas governor go far beyond that. In 2012, Perry tried at first to run to former Gov. Mitt Romney’s, R-Mass., right on economic issues only to get flanked on immigration.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush announced Thursday he would be making a "special announcement" in Miami, June 15.  Bush tweeted a link to his official website which allowed visitors to "RSVP" for the announcement. 

Bush's announcement is likely to be for his official entry into the crowded GOP candidate pool for 2016. The former Florida governor has remained pretty quiet on whether or not he would formally run for the GOP candidacy, but his intentions have hardly been cloaked in secrecy.

On Thursday,  U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., took his efforts to ensure authority over armed drones remains solely with the Department of Defense (DOD) to the national level as he showcased his Drone Reform Act (DRA) and claimed it was starting to pick up steam. 

Mario Diaz-Balart Fights Against Exporting to Cuban Military

U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., weighed in on Wednesday after the U.S. House passed the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. The Florida congressman noted that the bill included efforts to ensure American products were kept out of the hands of the Cuban military, even as normalization efforts with that communist nation continue.

David Jolly, Gwen Graham Team Up Against Drilling in the Eastern Gulf

Two members of the Florida congressional delegation -- Republican David Jolly and Democrat Gwen Graham -- teamed up this week to ensure the current ban on drilling for oil in the eastern Gulf goes all the way through 2027. Currently there is an effort in the U.S. Senate from U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., which would allow drilling up to 50 miles off the Florida Gulf Coast.

White House Report: Medicaid Expansion Would Greatly Improve Floridians' Coverage, Overall Health

The White House interjected itself in Florida’s battle over Medicaid expansion, releasing a new report Thursday morning detailing both the projected economic and health impacts Medicaid expansion would have on the state.
