Hallelujah! Lawmakers will get the chance to sit down to Seder or celebrate Good Friday with families and friends in their home districts. The Senate President and House Speaker have canceled all committees next week. Senators and Representatives will only come in for day-long sessions Wednesday and Thursday to hack away at budget proposals on the chamber floors. Praise the Lord.

As expected, the new health-care legislation contains loopholes that exempt certain congressional staffers. Rep. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge, saw this coming and today joined 17 other members of Congress in introducing a bill that would eliminate the special health care reform exemption for certain congressional staff so that all legislative branch employees are treated the same.

In the spirit of the season, Gov. Charlie Crist released his last 10 years of tax returns. Although not required, Crist released his returns along with his Financial Disclosure forms with the Florida Commission on Ethics. Crist's latest return, from 2008, shows him filing separately from his wife, Carole Lynn Crist. The "Married, Filing Separately" status usually indicates a large disparity between spousal incomes.

The St. Pete Times doesn't practice political activism? Hmmm. On one of its blogs today, a reporter runs a headline, "Crist backs union-busting education bill." "Union-busting" -- odd term to portray SB 6 as it makes its way to Gov. Crist for a signature. Union-busting is a term with a long and controversial history. All negative. It implies that the bill has a goal of twisting arms, cracking skulls -- figuratively speaking, anyway -- and forcing unions to disband.
