Ashley Turton, a high-profile lobbyist for Progress Energy, was found dead in her car Monday, in a garage behind her Washington, D.C., home, following a car crash and resultant fire. According to Politico, authorities have not determined the exact cause of the crash or why the car caught fire. Neighbors told police Ashley Turton was heading to the airport for an early flight.

State CFO Jeff Atwater praised a proposal from fellow Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan looking to amend the U.S. Constitution to mandate the federal government maintain a balanced budget. "Just as families across Florida and the nation work to balance their checkbooks each month, the federal government must work to balance the nations budget, said Atwater. The people of Florida spoke clearly and loudly on Election Day when they overwhelmingly, by a 72 percent margin, supported balancing the federal budget without raising taxes.

NASA astronaut Mark Kelly --husband to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head Saturday in a mass shooting but has survived and is in critical condition --released a statement Monday. Kelly is scheduled to command the Endeavor Space Shuttle on its mission to the International Space Station when it lifts off from Cape Canaveral later this year. Here is the text of the statement:

Everett Wilkinson, issuing a press release from the South Florida Tea Party and Florida Tea Party Patriots, said, "The tea party has consistently condemned statements and acts of violence both on the right and left." Gov. Scott met with Japan's Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara at the Capitol building Saturday afternoon to discuss Florida's high-speed rail project and expanding trade between Florida and Japan. The governor made no pronouncements about high-speed rail, but announced he plans to visit Japan to hold further trade talks later in his administration.

Open-borders enthusiasts at the Guatemalan Maya Center may not be doing handstands over it, but Rep. William Snyder declared his immigration town hall meeting a success on Friday night. The Palm City forum aimed at building a consensus on immigration policy in the state of Florida and featured 80-plus speakers who signed up to voice their opinions on the various elements of immigration reform.

In light of yet another round of cold weather, Gov. Rick Scott has reissued an executive order allowing vehicles transporting crops to ignore some of the normal rules. Former Gov. Charlie Crist issued the order originally on Dec. 10, but it expired on Dec. 31. But because of threatening conditions, Scott is allowing the continued relaxation of restrictions on the weight, height, length, and width for commercial vehicles transporting agricultural products.
