Glenn Beck: The Assassination of Sarah Palin 'Could Bring the Republic Down'

Glenn Beck wrote a letter to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Monday after the tragic mass shooting in Arizona on Saturday.

I want you to know you have my support, read Beck on his radio show. But please look into protection for your family. An attempt on you could bring the republic down.

The American experiment survived several assassinations and assassination attempts over the years. Take your pick -- Abraham Lincoln, the Kennedys, William McKinley, James A. Garfield, Martin Luther King and Huey Long -- and that's not including failed attempts.

No one individual is indispensable in the American government. Beck is a fan of the works of the founders. He should read the works of the Federalists after their nemesis Thomas Jefferson won the presidency in 1800. The likes of Fisher Ames and other Federalists bemoaned the impending doom of the republic but they did not point to the deaths of their leaders, namely George Washington in 1799 and Alexander Hamilton in 1804, as a reason the U.S. would collapse.

The United States has survived much worse than political figures being assassinated -- a fact that Mr. Beck should be more than aware of as we remember the 150th anniversary of the Civil War this year.
