Cold Weather Prompts Rick Scott to Waive Rules for Agriculture Trucks

In light of yet another round of cold weather, Gov. Rick Scott has reissued an executive order allowing vehicles transporting crops to ignore some of the normal rules.

Former Gov. Charlie Crist issued the order originally on Dec. 10, but it expired on Dec. 31. But because of threatening conditions, Scott is allowing the continued relaxation of restrictions on the weight, height, length, and width for commercial vehicles transporting agricultural products.

"This declaration will ensure that timely precautions are taken to protect Floridas agricultural crops due to freezing temperatures throughout much of Florida," stated the release from Scott's press office.

Scott issued a brief explanation in the order. "As governor, I am responsible to meet the dangers presented to this state and its people by this emergency," he said. "Therefore, by virtue of the authority vested in me by Article IV, Section 1(a) of the Florida Constitution and by the State Emergency Management Act, part I, chapter 252, Florida Statutes, and all other applicable laws, I promulgate the ... executive order, to take immediate effect."
