As the national uproar swelled over the failure of Sanford police to arrest the man who shot and killed an unarmed teenager, Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday announced a new attorney is taking over the state investigation. Assistant State Attorney Angela B. Corey will replace Norman Wolfinger, who was viewed by some lawmakers -- particularly Sens. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, Oscar Braynon, D-Miami Gardens, and Chris Smith, D-Oakland Park --as having ties too close to the Sanford police to investigate the case.

Florida East Coast Industries says it is developing a privately owned and operated passenger rail line to connect South Florida and Orlando by 2014. The All Aboard Florida project would use 200 miles of existing Florida East Coast Railway freight tracks between Miami and Cocoa, and build 40 miles of new track to complete the route to Orlando. Eventually the system could be expanded with connections to Tampa and Jacksonville, the company said.

Florida East Coast Industries has announced a $1 billion project to create a Miami-to-Orlando passenger train service by 2014 called "All Aboard Florida." The rail line would go from Miami to Cocoa along the FEC right-of-way that skirts the east coast of Florida and last supported passenger rail service in 1968, then travels west on new tracks to Orlando, a release from Florida East Coast Industries stated.

Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, withdrew an amendment to the Senates redistricting effort that sought a fourth Hispanic seat in Southeast Florida -- a seat now held by Sen. Gwen Margolis, D-Miami, that de la Portilla's brother Alex has eyed for a return to the Legislature. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla initially proposed the amendment during the Senate Reapportionment Committee meeting earlier in the week.

With the team moving into a new $515 million ballpark this year, the value of the Miami Marlins has grown 25 percent in the past year, according to Forbes magazine. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Rays were one of two teams to decline in value. In its latest Business of Baseball, the magazine reported that the average team value rose by 16 percent in the past year, with the average value standing at $605 million. Both of Floridas clubs were below the average.
