Castro Government Fears Technology, Marco Rubio Says

Could increased Internet access result in a Cuban Spring?

Floridas Sen. Marco Rubio thinks so. And he thinks thats why its not going to come to the island as long as the Castro regime lasts.

The keynote speaker at a panel discussion Wednesday hosted by the Heritage Foundation and Googles think tank, Google Ideas, Rubio, the son of Cuban exiles, predicted that greater access to technology would lead to greater longing for freedom in the countrys population -- a possibility the dictatorship fears.

If the people of Cuba have the ability to communicate with each other and the outside world and to receive information in real-time not just about whats happening on the island, but about the opportunities that people have all over the planet the Castro government wouldnt last but a few months, and they know that.

Rubio, a Catholic, also says he's "deeply concerned" with the relationship between the church and the Castro government. Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled to visit Cuba March 26, but does not plan to meet with dissidents there.
