A coalition that includes New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the NAACP, the National Urban League and the parents of Trayvon Martin plan to hold a rally as the task force onStand Your Ground law meets in Longwood on Tuesday. The Second Chance on Shoot First campaign coalition plans to deliver a petition with 340,000 names asking the governors Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection to reform or repeal the Stand Your Ground law.

A poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP), a firm with connections to prominent Democrats, released on Thursday, shows U.S. Rep. Connie Mack with a solid lead over his rivals -- former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, former U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon and businessman and retired Army officer Mike McCalister -- for the Republican nomination to challenge Democrat incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson. Unlike other polls, the survey shows Nelson beating Mack and LeMieux by 13 percent and McCalister and Weldon by 14 percent.

First lady Ann Scott will kick off the states 2012 summer literacy Friday morning at the Tallahassee Museum. Passage of an upcoming constitutional amendment would increase Floridians' personal income by $5.3 billion over a 10-year period, according to a new study. The analysis by Florida TaxWatch also projected that voter approval of Amendment 4 would increase the state's gross domestic product by $1 billion during the same period. Amendment 4 proposes:

While Wyman Duggan dropped out of the race this week to back Rep. Mike Weinstein, R-Jacksonville, another Republican entered the race to replace term-limited Sen. Steve Wise, R-Jacksonville -- prominent attorneyW.C. Gentry who has served on the Duval County School Board -- but then quickly announced he would not run. Gentry filed to run for the Senate seat on Thursday, but then announced that he was not going to actually run as it would require him to vacate his School Board seat.

From his perch on the Foreign Relations Committee, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., on Thursday called for regime change in Syria. Taking to the pages of the Wall Street Journal, Rubio called for the U.S. to step up and lead an aggressive international campaign to hasten Bashar al-Assads departure from power. Rubio weighed in on assorted international efforts concerning the Assad regime.

While he has no chance of winning the Republican presidential nomination and he will be leaving Congress after the November elections, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, shows no signs of heading to the political sidelines. Paul sent out a campaign update to supporters late on Wednesday in which he crowed about bringing 200 bound delegates to the Republican National Convention in Tampa which shatters the predictions of the pundits and talking heads and shows the seriousness of our movement.

Qualifying is wrapping up here in Tallahassee. Candidates have until noon Friday to file their paperwork to make the ballot. All eyes are on Sen. Jim Norman, R-Tampa, who represents parts of Hillsborough and Pasco counties, but has yet to qualify. Norman has drawn fire on ethical issues, prompting a federal investigation. In 2010, Norman survived a brutal primary battle with fellow Republican Kevin Ambler, then faced a token write-in-candidate in the general.

On Wednesday, attorney Wyman Duggan dropped out of the Republican primary to replace term-limited Sen. Steve Wise, R-Jacksonville, and backed Rep. Mike Weinstein, R-Jacksonville, for the seat.

Gov. Rick Scott will continue his rural county business round-table series today in Central Florida. The governor sat down with business and government officials in the western Panhandle on Monday and North Florida on Tuesday. The schedule for Thursday: 8 a.m.: Okeechobee County, Okeechobee County Historic Courthouse. 10 a.m.: Highlands County, Heartland National Bank, Lake Placid. 1 p.m.: Glades County, Glades County Historic Courthouse, Moore Haven.

Fresh with a victory over the statewide recall effort, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker may now be in line to appear in Tampa this summer. The Hill is reporting that the Republican governor may have earned a prime-time speaking spot at the party's national convention.

It may be true that the Sunshine State leads the nation in corruption, and that federal officials made 781 corruption convictions involving Florida between 2000 and 2010, but one former state ethics commissioner is convinced that nothing is going to be done about it.

U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta, wants the U.S. Department of Justice to mind its own business when it comes to Florida reviewing its registered voter list. With the state due to respond later today to an order by the DOJ to halt the review, Rooney has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder demanding that the DOJ stay out of the Florida issue.
