Warning signs to President Barack Obama and his re-election campaign team are coming in the form of the latest CBS/New York Times survey and Americans' souring perception of the state of the country's economy. The poll reveals that belief that the economy is getting better among registered voters nationwide has dropped by almost a third since April, falling from 33 percent to a dire 24 percent. Seven in 10 Americans now say the economy is in bad shape.

A Jacksonville company has been ordered to pay more than $730,000 in a bogus alcoholism cure scheme, according to the attorney generals office. Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Federal Trade Commission announced Thursday obtaining a court order to require the Alcoholism Cure Corp. to pay more than $730,000 to consumers and from continuing to sell their treatments. According to the complaint, the company prescribed dietary supplements through memberships for about $350, with the pitch that they could cancel the membership at any time.

The Republican leadership in the Florida Senate rallied behind former Senate President Tom Lee on Thursday as he seeks to return to Tallahassee. Lee faces Rep. Rachel Burgin, R-Tampa, in the Republican primary on Aug. 14 for the seat currently held by Sen. Ronda Storms, R-Brandon, who is running for Hillsborough County property appraiser.

A study needed to bring larger ships into JaxPort may be moved up a year -- from 2014 to April 2013 --according to the Florida Times-Union. The news, timed to create a positive atmosphere among business leaders in the northeast city for President Obamas campaign visit, would advance a $1.4 million Army Corps of Engineers study on deepening the channel. The Jacksonville Port Authority and other port advocates have been pushing to upgrade facilities to handle increasing global maritime trade and the ongoing widening of the Panama Canal.

Gov. Rick Scott appointed Jeffrey L. Oody, the president of Community State Bank, to the Santa Fe College District board of trustees. Oody, 43, of Starke, is an alumnus of the community college, earning his bachelors later from the University of North Florida and a master's in business administration from Liberty University. He succeeds Richard C. Solze. The appointment, which requires Florida Senate confirmation, runs through May 31, 2014.

Gov. Rick Scott has ordered state and national flags lowered to half-staff for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ricardo Ricky Seija on Wednesday outside the Hillsborough County Courthouse, Tampa City Hall and at the Capitol in Tallahassee. Seija, 31, of Tampa, was one of six soldiers killed July 9 when a roadside bomb hit an armored vehicle in the Warkdak Province, Afghanistan. Seija was assigned to the 978th Military Police Company, 93rd Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, III Corps, Fort Bliss, Texas.
