Voters in Miami-Dade County were still voting well beyond midnight, according to a Tweet from Secretary of State spokesman Chris Cate. It's 1:42 in the morning and I just heard there are still people voting in Miami-Dade County. Kudos to their commitment to voting, Cate tweeted.

The latest numbers in the House District 18 contest on Florida's Treasure Coast puts Democrat Patrick Murphy slightly ahead of U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Palm Beach Gardens. With numbers that have teetered back and forth all night, just after midnight Murphy was up by less than 1,000 votes out of 309,758 cast. Ballots remain uncounted in all three counties -- Martin, St. Lucie and Palm Beach.

With 95 percent of precincts reporting their vote totals, it's clear only Amendments 2 (Veterans Property Tax), 9 (Property Tax Exemptions for Surviving Spouses), and 11 (Senior Homestead Tax Exemption) have reached the necessary 60 percent threshold to enactment. In the clash of state Senate incumbents, Sen. Maria Sachs, D-Boca Raton, held off Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale, Sachs took nearly 53 percent of the vote. Senate President-designate Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, who had predicted Bogdanoff would prevail in the Democratic-leaning district, said she ran a "hard-fought campaign."

In CD 2, Republican Congressman Steve Southerland endured a spirited fight from former state Sen. Al Lawson, keeping his North Florida seat. Political observers called the race at 10 p.m. for the Panama City mortician with 320, 887 votes cast. Southerland had 53.26 percent of the the vote to Tallahassee Democrat Lawson's 46.74 percent.

Both CNN and FOX TV networks have called the U.S. Senate race for Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson. It looked ominous for Republican challenger Congressman Connie Mack IV at 7:30 p.m. ET when the most conservative county in Florida, Clay, clocked Nelson 10 points behind Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Romney was beating President Barack Obama at that point -- with 55 percent of the vote counted -- 73 percent to 26 percent.

Early and absentee voting in the Eastern Daylight Time Zone went to President Obama, with a 51.54 percent (2,436,040) to 47.72 (2,255,308) percent total for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, per numbers just out from the state Division of Elections. The western Panhandle counties in the Central Daylight Time Zone early and absentee ballot totals are expected to be posted at 8:30 p.m. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson received 20,854 votes, 0.44 percent.

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami Gardens, is expressing concern that the lengthy ballot in Miami-Dade County may detract some voters in her district. A release from the congresswomans office noted the ballot in Miami-Dade County is 10 pages long, written in three languages, and people have waited three hours or more at some precincts.

Election Day snafu No. 1 (as far as we know so far) comes not from South Florida but from the left coast, from Pinellas County, where hundreds of voters were told to come to the polls on Wednesday, not today. A robocall meant to be auto-dialed on Monday mistakenly went out between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Those on the receiving end were folks who asked to vote by mail but hadn't returned their ballots.
