Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford will make a special appearance Monday at a complimentary reception to kick off Broward Days. The independent, nonprofit organization has for 20 years served to bring together diverse business and community members on a legislative agenda to benefit Broward County and foster "a greater understanding of its tremendous economic impact on the state of Florida." This year's theme is "Bringing Tallahassee to Broward." Attendees will have an opportunity to meet with Florida Cabinet members and other legislative leaders.

U.S. Rep. Bill Young, R-Fla., passed away on Friday. Earlier in the month, Young, who was 82, announced he would not run for re-election. Young had been in the hospital for a back injury resulting from a plane crash he survived back in 1970. There had been reports that Young was in poor health though, earlier in the week, he spoke with former President George W. Bush.

Voters still remain skepticalof the National Security Agencys domestic surveillance programs, but most agree that the continued disclosure of details about these programs is ultimately bad for national security. A new Rasmussen Reports poll found 34 percent of likely U.S. voters favor the NSAs tracking of the telephone calls and emails of millions of Americans as part of the effort to fight terrorism. Forty-nine percent are opposed, while 17 percent are not sure.

On Friday, Gov. Rick Scott highlighted the growth of online job openings in Florida over the last four and a half years. In April 2009, there were less than 152,200 online job openings in the Sunshine State. Last month, there were more than 271,100.

As his law takes effect, a new poll shows voters are growing more passionate about their view of President Barack Obama on health care. Rasmussen Reports released a poll on Friday which shows 44 percent of likely voters give Obama good or excellent marks on the issue, up from 35 percent last month. The poll also shows 47 percent of those surveyed give him poor marks, up 8 percent from last month. The poll of 1,000 likely voters was taken Oct. 12-13 and had a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.

Gubernatorial candidate Adrian Wyllie, a businessman and veteran who has led the Florida Libertarian Party, announced in a letter on Thursday that he was resigning from the state committee leading Fix the Debt. Wyllie is a heavy favorite to be the Libertarian gubernatorial nominee in 2014. Wyllie insisted the group was more interested in public relations than real solutions and pointed to his frustrations in a recent conference when he attempted to oppose efforts to support raising the debt ceiling and was not even recognized. U.S. Rep. Bill Young, R-Fla., who recently announced he wouldn't seek re-election in 2014, has fallen very ill, according to a spokesman. Young had said he would not be seeking re-election partly due to his health. Young was staying in the hospital for a back injury, but his condition has worsened. "Representative C.W. Bill Young's condition turned for the worse overnight and he is gravely ill," a spokesman for Young said. Young's doctor said his prognosis is "guarded."

Gov. Rick Scott weighed in on Thursday on the fight over the debt ceiling and the federal shutdown. Scott contrasted the record in Washington with his own in Tallahassee. Washingtons failure to reach a long-term agreement on the debt ceiling confirms our nations leaders have their heads in the sand about our economic future, Scott said. Americas unchecked debt, along with the increase in inflation that follows, will only put us deeper in the hole we have been trying to climb out of since the national economic downturn.

Only 21 percent of likely U.S. voters think Republicans are acting on a bipartisan basis these days, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll. Sixty-one percent believe they are acting like partisan Republicans.

Former U.S. Rep. Allen West lashed out at President Barack Obama as a tyrant" on Wednesday night and insisted the federal health-care law is not the law of the land. West took to Facebook on Wednesday night to rail against the agreement to end the federal shutdown and raise the debt ceiling.
