Jewish and African-American Communities Should Join to Oust Debbie Wasserman Schultz

September 11, 2015 - 4:15pm

It’s time. In fact, it's past time.

Debbie needs to go.  President Obama should have replaced her already as DNC chair, but since he hasn’t, it's up to the Jewish community and the African-American community to get the job done.

She is no longer fit to hold that congressional seat, and between the two communities, we can take it away from her. A message should be sent to DWS, and really, others, who think they have taken up permanent residence in Washington, D.C.

That message is: We put you in, and we can take you out.

Good for Miami-Dade Teachers Union, Sarasota Commission; Sorry, Darren Soto, Dawn Pardo

Welcome to The Dean's List -- an Ed Dean-style look at who Florida's political achievers were (and weren't) in the last seven days. What you see here is strictly my opinion, not necessarily the editor's or the rest of the staff at Sunshine State News.

Calling the Governor Out on His SFWMD Fibs

September 11, 2015 - 10:30am

You know I like this governor. I make no secret of the fact that I look kindly on what Rick Scott has done overall to strengthen Florida's economy and position the state to lead in uncertain times. So let's get that out of the way first.

But liking the governor doesn't mean he can do no wrong. In fact, every once in a while he does something that makes me want to pull his governorship over, turn off the engine, and box his ears.

Thursday was one of those days.

Scott had one of his nose-growing moments.

Backroom Briefing: Lobbyist Miscues Laid Out in Legislative Report

September 10, 2015 - 9:45pm

So far, the legislative effort to review lobbying firms' compensation reports hasn't appeared to find any signs of corruption or malfeasance. But some firms might want to clean up their books a little bit.

To try to gauge whether lobbying firms were leveling on reports they are required to file with the state about who's paying them to work the Capitol, the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee decided to look over those statements from 2014. The panel picked 26 lobbying firms to undergo random audits. In that first batch, 16 had "findings," meaning they got something wrong.

The Iran Charade on Capitol Hill

September 11, 2015 - 7:00am

Congress is finally having its say on the Iran deal. It will be an elaborate charade, however, because, having first gone to the U.N., President Obama has largely drained congressional action of relevance. At the Security Council, he pushed through a resolution ratifying the deal, thus officially committing the United States as a nation to its implementation -- in advance of any congressional action.

The resolution abolishes the entire legal framework, built over a decade, underlying the international sanctions against Iran. A few months from now, they will be gone.

Weeks Later, Florida Redistricting Drama Still Won't Let Up

If this week’s events are any indicator, Florida’s redistricting drama is far from over even as the clock winds down to Oct. 17, when both chambers must reach some kind of agreement on Florida’s congressional maps. Ever since they left Tallahassee at the end of August, the question of which set of maps will get the rubber stamp has been looming over state lawmakers, who can’t come to a mutual agreement on which set is best for Florida voters.

Jeb Bush Trots Out Endorsements of Former Florida House Speakers

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., might have served as speaker of the Florida House but Republican presidential rival former Gov. Jeb Bush reeled in the support of several leaders from the Sunshine State who led that chamber in Tallahassee.
