Gwen Graham 'Considering' Running for Governor

U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham, D-Tallahassee, threw out a big "maybe" in Florida politics Thursday morning, saying she was considering running for governor in 2018. 

Alan Grayson Bill Would Make It Easier for Employees to Form a Union

Congressman Alan Grayson, a candidate in the Florida Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, introduced the Employee Free Choice Act of 2016 (HR 5000) Wednesday, making it easier for workers who want a union to form or join one, and making it harder for employers to stop them. Under the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), if a majority of workers in a workplace sign cards authorizing a union, they get a union.  HR 5000 also stiffens penalties against employers who break the law, and provides for mediation and binding arbitration when parties are unable to agree on a first contract.

Palm Harbor resident Jeffrey Bragg and state Rep. Bill Hager, R-Delray Beach, have been asked back to interview again with the Florida Cabinet for the state insurance commissioner job next week.

But there still doesn't appear to be a consensus between Gov. Rick Scott and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, who must jointly recommend the replacement for outgoing Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty.

Retiree Healthcare Subsidies for Florida Public Employees Costing $7.5 Billion

Most of Florida's cities and counties are making great strides to curtail government retiree healthcare subsidies, but a LeRoy Collins Institute study released Wednesday shows the Sunshine State still has approximately $7.5 billion in unfunded liabilities associated with retiree healthcare benefits.

Florida Democratic Party Falls Behind in Fundraising for 2016

The Florida Democratic Party has its work cut out for it for during the 2016 election, with an expensive election season looming and a small amount of cash on hand when compared to their Republican counterparts.

The FDP’s fundraising numbers for the first quarter of 2016 weren’t too measly, with the party raising more than $682,000 during the first three months of May. Some of the FDP’s biggest donations came from Disney and from health insurance companies like FloridaBlue. Florida Power and Light also contributed a significant amount to the FDP during that time.

SFWMD Recognizes April as Water Conservation Month

Florida’s waterways are part of the state’s important ecosystem, and April is a month entirely dedicated to water conservation in the Sunshine State. 

The South Florida Water Management District sent out a reminder this week making sure Floridians know how to best conserve the water in their home state.
