Scott Ceremonially Signs Bill to Protect Families of Fallen Law Enforcement Officers

Gov. Rick Scott ceremonially signed a bill to help families of law enforcement employees and first responders killed in the line of duty on Monday in Orlando.

The bill, SB 7012, filed by Sen. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, and co-sponsored by Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, would provide the beneficiary or family member the fallen officer’s monthly salary for life. The benefits would apply to Florida’s Special Risk class, which includes firemen, correctional officers, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, probation officers and other employees whose jobs might put them at risk.

Words that should trigger the red flag: “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” In the Sunshine State, it’s time to start waving in warning because U.S. Congressman Curt Clawson has arrived with a federal “solution” to Florida water storage issues specifically in regard to the restoration of the Everglades.

Sadly, his proposal is one that will not solve anything. To understand why, one must understand the challenge.

David Jolly to '60 Minutes': I'm Trying to Stop Congress Dialing for Dollars

Florida Congressman David Jolly, who is running for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, appeared on CBS’ "60 Minutes" Sunday night, calling the practice of U.S. representatives dialing for dollars “shameful.”
 
The "60 Minutes" story highlighted the amount of time members spend on the phone instead of doing the job they were elected to do.
