The Fight against AAF Is Far from Over

June 29, 2016 - 6:00am

I recently read a column in Sunshine State News by Ed Dean, a statewide syndicated radio talk show host, in which he stated, “...since the announcement of the high-speed rail train project, All Aboard Florida (AAF) has been outflanked by its opponents when it comes to public relations (June 20, "AAF Gaining Steam, Opponents Losing It"). But on the legal front, AAF is winning the battle.”

Where's Pam Bondi? Attorney General Could Do Real Good by Defending Florida's Sunshine Laws

June 28, 2016 - 6:00am

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) is not the worst offender in Florida’s never-ending War on Open Government.

Impact of Abortion Ruling on Florida Law Unclear

June 27, 2016 - 7:15pm

Florida abortion providers are breathing sighs of relief following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Monday striking down a Texas law that would have greatly limited access to legal abortion in that state.

The Texas law would have required doctors to have admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles of the clinics where they perform abortions and clinics to meet the same standards as walk-in surgical centers.

Central Florida Candidates Ready for Mad Dash to the Congressional Primaries

June 28, 2016 - 6:00am
David Jolly, Dan Webster and Charlie Crist

The Florida congressional landscape is set to radically change after the November elections. Between redistricting, some unexpected retirements and two representatives running for the U.S. Senate, almost half of the Sunshine State’s 27 congressional seats are in play in the primaries or the general election. With that many seats up for grabs, Florida can expect some differences in how it's represented starting in 2017.

Carlos Beruff: I'll Gladly Take Rubio's Spot to Speak at RNC

Carlos Beruff, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio

Most of the Republican field has cleared the path for U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio to run for reelection this year except real estate developer Carlos Beruff, who is holding out to face off against Rubio in the primary.

Britain's Welcome Revival of Nationhood

June 27, 2016 - 7:00am

The Leave campaign won the referendum on withdrawing Britain from the European Union because the arguments on which the Remain side relied made Leave's case. The Remain campaign began with a sham, was monomaniacal with its Project Fear, and ended in governmental thuggishness.

Just Britain

Martin County Gets 'Worst Local Government Decision in Florida' Award

June 27, 2016 - 6:00am

Martin County residents apparently need more things to be afraid of this summer. Sewage and other polluting runoff in their waterways aren't enough.

Now the clever folks at the Parks and Recreation Department in this Treasure Coast county are saying, for good measure let's scare the pants off people who want to spend a few hours at the beach.

They've introduced what they call their "trash-free parks program."

"Trash-free." Could there be a better example of a useless euphemism? Or a silly misnomer?

Competitive Congressional Primaries Across North Florida

The Florida congressional district is set to radically change after the November elections. Between redistricting, some unexpected retirements and two representatives running for the U.S. Senate, almost half of the Sunshine State’s 27 congressional seats are in play in the primaries or the general election. With that many seats up for grabs, Florida can expect some differences in how it's represented starting in 2017.
