Trump Administration Advances Drug Importation Plan
In a move that could help Gov. Ron DeSantis carry out an ambitious effort to cut drug prices, President Donald Trump’s administration announced Wednesday a plan intended to make it easier for states like Florida to bring in prescription drugs from Canada and other countries.
Although the proposal has some restrictions, it could still be a victory for the Republican governor, a strong ally of the president.
Everybody Get It Now? Finally the Miami-to-Orlando Train-Boondoggle Is Fully Exposed
For five years, every financial and business plan from All Aboard Florida (Virgin Trains) has centered on their higher speed rail service taking only 3.15 hours from Miami to Orlando to compete with cars and planes. That time frame allowed for only four stops: in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach and the Orlando airport, requiring speeds of 110 mph and 125 mph on Phase 2.
Zany Two-City Shakedown Scheme Has Alienated Rays Fans
Two months ago the attendance-challenged Tampa Bay Rays could at least boast of a fiercely loyal, though modest, fan base.
No more, thanks to Rays owner Stu Sternberg, striking out with a far-out proposal to play half a season in Tampa Bay and the other half in Montreal where Major League Baseball failed 15 years ago. That franchise moved to Washington, D.C. and thrives today.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement in June, at the end of the two-day owners’ meetings in New York. National sports media reports of the scheme ranged from comic to desperate.
Democrats' Radical Proposals Just Keep Coming
Democrats are in the process of staging their second round of presidential debates, with the second half taking place via CNN this evening. The party is still contending with 20 candidates and still needs to segregate the field (forgive the triggering term) into two separate evenings of discussions. And Tuesday night, once again, we were treated to the battle of the extremists.
Rooney Abandons Education Committee, but Can't Resist Student Loan Reform
Even though he has left a key committee for higher education issues, U.S. Rep. Francis Rooney, R-Fla., has teamed up with U.S. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, on a bill trying to hold tuition down by reforming federal student loans.
Rooney and Lee brought out the Higher Education Reform and Opportunity (HERO) Act which they showcased on Wednesday.
Vern Buchanan Presents Himself as Israel's Champion
This week, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., stressed his support of Israel and his opposition to the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement, as a stance that is beginning to define his re-election campaign.
First elected to Congress in 2006, Buchanan has already drawn a major challenger in state Rep. Margaret Good, D-Sarasota, who defeated his son James for an open state House seat in a special election early last year.

Florida's New Climate Change Czar: Better than a Scientist
Florida is about to get a climate change czar -- a key staffer charged with "adapting the most vulnerable state in the nation to climate change."
Apparently, say The Miami Herald and other newspapers that collaborated on the story, Gov. Ron DeSantis is set to announce the appointment of new Chief Resilience Officer Julia Nesheiwat. Maybe as early as today.
