Florida Delegation Backs Latest Round of Sanctions on the Maduro Regime

With the Trump administration putting additional sanctions on the Maduro regime, the Florida congressional delegation offered strong support. 

President Donald Trump issued an executive order imposing sanctions on  all U.S.-based assets of Nicolás Maduro's regime and giving the U.S. Treasury Department the authority to sanction any individual or entity who supports the Maduro regime. 

Rubio to State Department: Push Poland to Do Right by Victims of Nazis, Communists

Senate Foreign Relations Committeeman Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is calling on the U.S. State Department to support Poland to do more for those who lost their property to the Nazis and the communist regime that took over after World War II. 

Rubio paired up with U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., to send a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the matter, rounding up 86 other senators to sign as well.

New Opioid Law Causes Confusion for Doctors

Florida lawmakers passed far-reaching health care legislation this year, from trying to import drugs from other countries to regulating plastic-surgery centers.

But it’s another seemingly simple bill meant to prevent opioid abuse that is causing widespread confusion among physicians trying to figure out how to follow the law.

Staff members of the Florida Board of Medicine and physician organizations have been fielding questions from doctors about the broadly written bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in June.

Galvano: Florida Can Learn from Weekend's Mass Violence and White Nationalism

In the run-up to the 2020 legislative session, the Florida Senate will review acts of mass violence such as the deadly shootings this weekend in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, along with factors such as white nationalism.

Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, on Monday directed Senate Infrastructure and Security Chairman Tom Lee, R-Thonotosassa, to lead efforts to determine if any further action is needed after laws were enacted in the wake of the Feb. 14, 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Shevrin Jones Pushes Marijuana Decriminalization in Tallahassee

On Monday, a Democrat in the Florida Legislature filed a bill to decriminalize possessing 20 grams or less of marijuana in the Sunshine State. 

State Rep. Shevrin Jones, D-West Park, the deputy Democratic leader in the House, filed the bill. 

“We must restore justice to our broken criminal justice system,” Jones said. “For far too long, communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by laws governing marijuana, and we must end this injustice once and for all.” 

Ron DeSantis: Farmers Hit by Hurricane Michael Have Gotten $13 Million in Bridge Loans

On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the state government has awarded almost  $13 million on Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan for agricultural producers in North Florida hit by Hurricane Michael back in October.  

DeSantis announced more than 70 applications have been approved from farmers in Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Wakulla, Walton and Washington Counties.

For the under-30 zealots who enjoy the free-wheeling e-scooter culture in Tampa’s urban core, it is the best of times.  For seniors, the disabled, children, and strollers confined to the pedestrian experience, it has been a nightmare.

Only a few months into a one-year pilot project, scooters have caused at least one death, countless injuries, obstruction of legitimate commerce, and eyesores throughout the city as riders leave piles of the vehicles on private property, street corners, in the middle of sidewalks, and gutters.
