Untangling the SB 6 Mythology

April 18, 2010 - 6:00pm

Senate Bill 6 is dead. Long live education reform.

Though the controversial teacher performance-pay bill was vetoed by Gov. Charlie Crist, leading Republican lawmakers vow to resurrect the measure during the 2011 session -- when a new governor is in office.

Maygarden to National Strategies

National Strategies LLC (NSI), a Washington-based consulting group, announced that former House Majority Leader Jerry Maygarden will be added to its Florida operations as an advisor.

We are building upon NSIs growth in Florida during the past two years, said Tim Onoff, president of NSI. Leader Maygarden brings tremendous expertise and an in-depth understanding of how Florida state and local governments operate.

Maygarden was mayor of Pensacola before serving in the House from 1994 to 2002.

Crist Rush to Judgment on SB 6

April 18, 2010 - 6:00pm

Gov. Charlie Crist assailed fellow Republicans for ramming Senate Bill 6 through the Legislature like Democrats ran health-care reform through Congress.

"Quite frankly it reminds me of what happened with the health-care bill in Washington where members of my party criticized the Democrats for sort of jamming something down their throat, and then here, about a month later after that happened, the very same thing happens here in education," Crist said after vetoing the teacher performance-pay bill.

Times/Herald Holds Teachers Union Harmless, Apparently

The Times/Herald combo is good at "follow the money" campaign stories. They've been writing them for years, separate or together. There's always that sneering quality in the story's tone when their reporters write about the bad guys donating those Big Bucks to their favorite evil candidates. You can almost see the reporter's lip curl up at the corner.

The Veto That Changes Nothing

April 16, 2010 - 6:00pm

The moment of "the veto" is over. Teacher performance pay is a null issue. But what did it accomplish, really, this controversial veto?

The one who held the veto pen and the Republican Party are more estranged than a couple trapped in a marriage from hell.

There's a Reason the White House is Not on Florida Avenue

During Hardball today on MSNBC, Chris Matthews, Chuck Todd and Chris Cillizza talked about the possibility of Gov. Charlie Crist running as an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate and what it would do to his presidential ambitions. Theres also talk about a Marco Rubio presidential campaign in 2012 and, of course, there are always whispers about Jeb Bush's presidential hopes.
