What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A lawyer or a public servant. I graduated from the Florida State University law school.
What do you consider to be your biggest political achievement?
Getting seven pieces of legislation that I've proposed signed into law, including drug testing for high school athletes.
What was your biggest political faux pas?
So far I've been fortunate in that I haven't had any.
Who is state government do you most admire?
Former Sen. and Rep. Daniel Webster, who was the first Republican speaker of the House in 122 years, and a great statesman.
Who in all the world do you most admire?
My grandparents, because they overcame many hardships to relocate their family from Cuba to the United States.
Who is your favorite lawmaker of the opposite party and why?
Rep. Luis Garcia and Rep. Kelly Skidmore, because they have been close friends and mentors to me.
What do you remember as being your wackiest constituent request?
A mother came to me and pleaded with me to get her daughter onto the cheerleading team at her high school, but I told her there really was nothing I could do about that.
What is your favorite place in the world?
Miami Beach. My family has a condo there and I get there as often as I can.
What is your least favorite household chore?
I really don't like washing the dishes.
