Running to the Right in House District 80

May 31, 2010 - 6:00pm

In this year of the angry, anti-government voter, Republicans in Florida House District 80 have three flavors of conservatism from which to choose.

A lively Republican primary race in the east-central district features incumbent Debbie Mayfield, R-Vero Beach, former state Rep. Art Argenio and first-time candidate Bradley Ward.

AIF Backs Atwater for CFO and Putnam for Agriculture

The Associated Industries of Florida PAC endorsed Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, for state CFO today and Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam to serve as commissioner of agriculture and consumer services.

These candidates have a longstanding relationship with AIF and their leadership is exactly what we need as we elect a new Cabinet, said AIF President and CEO Barney Bishop. A Look at This Shortened Week

May 31, 2010 - 6:00pm

With the budget out of the way and a little more than $200 million lighter Gov. Charlie Crist can return his attention to oil in the Gulf of Mexico, an abortion bill he still awaits from the House and his U.S. Senate campaign though some might say the first two things are directly connected to the last.

Crist Takes Budget Ax to Republican Priorities

May 27, 2010 - 6:00pm

Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed $371 million from the state budget Friday and signed a spending plan that strips away key proposals backed by major Republican lawmakers.

Crist, now running for U.S. Senate as an independent, waited until the afternoon of his last day to sign the budget. And what he signed was a slimmed-down, slightly-more-than $70 billion spending plan rid of a much-debated raid on transportation funds, a reduction in Medicaid funds to nursing homes and many local and higher education projects.

Crist Signs 'Jobs For Florida' Bill

May 27, 2010 - 6:00pm

Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday signed into law a $175 million jobs bill the Senate backer of which said will help the state more quickly recover from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

Included among a flurry of bills signed into law on the eve of the Memorial Day Weekend, Crist approved SB 1752, which among other provisions provides tax incentives for qualified businesses and tax breaks for other business related activities in an effort to jump start an economy that now sees unemployment at more than 12 percent.
