Gulf State Tourism Industries Ask For $500 Million from BP Escrow Fund

The tourism industries in states impacted by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill will need $500 million more from BP for a marketing campaign to counter bad perceptions created by the spill, USA Today reports.

Bruce O'Donoghue, Tea Party, Nazis and the Jewish Defense League

Tea Partiers aren't the only ones on edge in the 8th Congressional District.

As seven Republicans try to knock off Rep. Alan Grayson, a reader of our story about the contest offered this insight about one of the GOP hopefuls:

"Bruce O'Donoghue has about as much to do with Tea Parties as Hitler had with the Jewish Defense League."

We're not sure what prompted that rhetorical outburst, since O'Donoghue was quoted as criticizing the TEA tactics.

Florida Gives Another Break to Tax Scofflaws

Amnesty may carry a negative connotation when it comes to immigration, but it turns positive when applied to taxes. At least some people think so.

Beginning Thursday, the state of Florida will waive penalties on back taxes owed by businesses and individuals. During a three-month window closing Sept. 30, all applicable interest fees also will be cut in half.

A similar tax-amnesty program recouped $260 million in previously lost revenue in 2003. This year's version, coming in tighter economic times, is projected to generate up to $100 million.

Holly Benson Praises Supreme Court Decision on Guns


Former Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Holly Benson, currently in a tight battle for the Republican attorney general nomination, weighed in on the Supreme Court decision on Monday, striking down local gun-control laws.

This decision by the Supreme Court is a monumental victory for freedom and the Second Amendment in America, said Benson. The highest court in the land has reaffirmed that our Second Amendment rights are absolute, and that government interference of these rights, at any level, will not be tolerated.

UF Survey: Florida Consumer Confidence Stricken by Oil, Economy

Anxieties about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have combined with a slow economy to cut June consumer confidence in the state by 3 points compared to last year at this time.

A University of Florida survey reports that between this year and last, consumer confidence fell from 70 to 67 points, and perception of personal finances fell from 54 to 45 points. Perceptions of personal finance for the coming year fell from 79 to 75.
