Republicans Want to Make State Races About Obama

Republicans in Florida are trying to make the November elections for state offices a referendum on President Barack Obama, betting that the Sunshine States continuing lagging economy and mounting discontent with the White House will pay heavy dividends when voters hit the polls.

Sen. George LeMieux Helps Propel Small-Business Bill Toward 'Yes' Vote

Florida's Sen. George LeMieux was one of two Republicans Tuesday who voted for the U.S. Senate's long-stalled small-business bill. LeMieux -- along with Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio -- probably will be credited with getting it passed probably later this week.

LeMieux said he'd always favored the bill, which President Barack Obama was pushing to create jobs. The idea was to provide credit-starved small businesses with borrowing opportunities. But, said the Florida Republican, "I was waiting for more Republican amendments to be considered."

Ander Crenshaw Calling on North Florida Veterans to be Recognized

U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw is calling on residents of the Fourth District, which stretches from the eastern outskirts of Tallahassee all the way to Jacksonville, to help his office identify veterans who served in the armed forces between 1941 and 1979 to be recognized at a ceremony that will be held at Mayport in the fall.

Despite Living in Meek's District, Yolly Roberson Backs Charlie Crist

Rep. Yolly Roberson, D-North Miami Beach, lives in U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meeks congressional district -- but she will not back the Democratic nominee in the U.S. Senate election. Instead, Roberson announced on Tuesday that she is backing Gov. Charlie Crist, who is running for the Senate seat without party affiliation.

Bill McCollum Confident Suit Against Obamacare Won't Be Dismissed

With oral arguments concluded in Pensacola, where a federal judge weighs whether to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Bill McCollum against new federal health-care laws backed by President Barack Obama, McCollum feels good that his case --which is being backed by 19 other states and the National Federation of Independent Businesses --will be heard.

Florida Retailers Back Pam Bondi for AG

On Tuesday, the Florida Retail Federation PAC (FRFPAC) announced it was backing former Assistant State Attorney Pam Bondi, the Republican candidate to be Floridas next attorney general, over Democratic candidate Sen. Dan Gelber of Miami Beach.

Cabinet Proclaims Sept. 25 as Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day

Gov. Charlie Crist and the Cabinet voted on Tuesday that Sept. 25 will be designated Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day in honor of the founder of the Special Olympics. The measure was introduced by Agricultural and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles Bronson.
