Despite Living in Meek's District, Yolly Roberson Backs Charlie Crist

Rep. Yolly Roberson, D-North Miami Beach, lives in U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meeks congressional district -- but she will not back the Democratic nominee in the U.S. Senate election. Instead, Roberson announced on Tuesday that she is backing Gov. Charlie Crist, who is running for the Senate seat without party affiliation.

Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, I got to see firsthand how Charlie Crist fights tirelessly for the people of Florida, said Roberson, who placed fourth in the Democratic primary to replace Meek in Congress and may be considering running for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami Gardens, who won the primary and is a heavy favorite to win the congressional seat. We need someone in the United States Senate who will fight for good jobs, quality health care, safe schools and safe streets for Floridians in every community across our state. Charlie Crist is the candidate who can win in November and deliver on those issues when he gets to Washington. I am proud to endorse his candidacy.

Yolly Roberson is not only a leader for her community, but for our entire state, replied Crist. I am honored by her endorsement, and look forward to working with her to ensure that economic opportunity is available to every Floridian who is struggling through these difficult times. As an independent, I will work with both Democrats and Republicans to ensure that becomes a reality.

Crist has won the backing of some Democratic members of the Legislature including Senate Democratic Leader Al Lawson of Tallahassee who, like Roberson, was defeated in a congressional primary, and a handful of House Democrats.
