The Transformative Election

November 14, 2010 - 6:00pm

WASHINGTON -- As he promised it would be, Barack Obama's presidency has been transformative, but not as he intended. Whether it lasts two or six more years, it is an exhausted volcano because its biggest consequence may already have happened: It has resuscitated the right, making 2010 conservatism's best year in 30 years -- since the election of Ronald Reagan.

Class-Size Vote Will Add $1 Billion to State Budget

November 10, 2010 - 6:00pm

Florida voters sent mixed fiscal signals when they overwhelmingly approved a nonbinding referendum calling on the federal government to balance its budget.

2011: More of the Same

November 12, 2010 - 6:00pm

Liberal Democrats show no signs of reading their washout at the polls as a reason to shift to the center. President Obama told "60 Minutes" his only mistake was he passed some major legislation, but he didn't focus enough on the messy "how" -- as in "how it's risky to pass an Obamacare bill that a majority says it doesn't want."

GOP Freshmen Will Hold Boehner to His Big Promises

November 11, 2010 - 6:00pm

For political junkies of a certain age, it was a given that the House of Representatives would always be controlled by Democrats. They won the chamber in 1954 and held on for 40 years -- more than twice as long as any party in American history had before.

David Axelrod: President Obama Ready to Extend Across-the-Board Tax Cuts

President Barack Obama may be ready to throw in the towel, backing what he hasn't before -- a temporary continuation of across-the-board tax cuts, even for the wealthiest taxpayers.

Top Obama aide David Axelrod told the Huffington Post that the president's capitulation probably is the only way middle-class taxpayers will be able to keep their tax cuts. It's just the political reality in the face of the president's congressional losses last week, he said.

Florida Lags in Race for Federal Dollars, Clean Energy Group Says

Commenting after Sunshine State News' report on a renewable-energy poll, power executive Josh Kellam called on Florida lawmakers to get moving on a clean-energy policy before year end.

While the majority of other states are already reaping the economic and environmental benefits of strong policies and incentives for renewable energy, Florida remains stuck in the starting gate, said Kellam, president of Citizens for Clean Energy and senior vice president of Global Energy United LLC.

Prayer Effort Launches for Jim DeMint

While U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina is being praised for backing Marco Rubio in Florida, there have been more than a few grumbles about how some candidates DeMint backed came up short on Election Day -- leaving the Democrats in control of the U.S. Senate.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council announced on Wednesday that his organization would lead a prayer effort for DeMint, hoping to get a million Americans to pray for the senator.

George LeMieux Calls to Ban Earmarks

With Congress headed back into session next week, outgoing Republican U.S. Sen. George LeMieux called on Thursday to ban earmarks.

Next Tuesday, members of the next session of Congress will vote on whether to continue the ban on earmarks, said LeMieux. While I will not take part in that vote, I strongly urge members to approve the ban and focus on ways to shrink government, end deficit spending, and pay down the national debt. Democrats should follow suit.
