Dean Cannon Calls for Massive Changes in State Superme Court

Talking to the media on Monday, House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, unveiled a number of reforms that will be pushed out of the Judiciary Committee tackling immigration and the courts.

Cannon said the proposal would mandate every private company in Florida with more than 100 employees to use E-Verify to check the immigration status of every potential employee starting in 2013.

Riding Fence on Immigration, Cannon Wants to Phase In E-Verify

Confirming suspicions that he will try to derail, or at least dilute, immigration legislation this session, House Speaker Dean Cannon doused his chamber's E-Verify bill on Monday.

The Winter Park Republican said the measure will require the public sector to use the federal database to screen new hires, and then phase in usage for private-sector employers.

"Employers with 100 or more employees come on line July 1, 2012 -- all others on July 1, 2013," said Cannon spokeswoman Katie Betta.

Florida Protests Will Top 40 Tuesday

More than 40 demonstrations and counterdemonstrations are planned Tuesday across Florida, as opponents and supporters of Gov. Rick Scott's proposed tax and budget cuts rally on the opening day of the 2011 Legislature.

Neither side is predicting how many people will turn out, but both camps are jousting for position -- and that could lead to confrontations at some venues.

Reps. Weinstein, Metz to Open Florida Tea Party Caucus on Tuesday

While they are in town Tuesday to rally in support of Gov. Rick Scott's budget and tax cuts, tea partiers are also invited to attend the first meeting of a legislative Tea Party Caucus.

Reps. Mike Weinstein, R-Jacksonville, and and Larry Metz, R-Eustis, will host the inaugural meeting of the caucus -- believed to be the first of its kind in the nation -- at the Capitol complex Tuesday afternoon.
