Florida's Political Leaders Respond to Rick Scott's State of the State Address

Leaders across Florida weighed in on Gov. Rick Scotts first State of the State address, a message in which the governor focused on job creation and advocated for his proposed budget.

Responses to the address broke down on partisan lines, with Scotts fellow Republicans praising the speech and Scotts record during his first weeks in office, and Democrats assailing them.

Scott Sees Florida as 'Model for Success'

Announcing that "bold reforms are under way," Gov. Rick Scott delivered his inaugural State of the State address Tuesday night with the declaration: "Our success will be the model for the nation."

Acknowledging boisterous rallies outside the Capitol earlier in the day, the Republican governor said, "Thousands of our fellow Floridians have assembled here in our capital -- some to criticize our budget priorities, and far more to thank us for our willingness to make hard choices."

Senate Preps Health Care Freedom Act for Final Vote on First Day

The Health Care Freedom Act, which would place an amendment to the state Constitution on the 2012 ballot allowing Floridians to opt out of the individual mandate portion of the year-old federal health care law, is ready for a final vote in the state Senate after being introduced by Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island.

Tea Parties Challenge Republican Lawmakers to Pass E-Verify

Left-wing detractors who simplistically tar tea parties as tools of corporate America and the Koch brothers will be disoriented by a Florida tea group memo that blasts state Republican leaders.

The memo urges the state to mandate use of the federal E-Verify database to screen all new public- and private-sector hires, and chides the GOP for tinkering with the enabling legislation:
