House Prepares for Unemployment Compensation Reform Debate

With protesters gathered in Tallahassee, opposing the plan to reduce unemployment compensation from 26 weeks to 20 weeks and down to 12 weeks if the unemployment rate drops below 5 percent, the House will debate the matter on Thursday. The chairman of the House Rules and Calendar Committee, Rep. Gary Aubuchon, R-Cape Coral, set the stage for the debate, announcing that each side will be given 30 minutes to debate the matter on Thursday.

Poll: Majority Believes Unionized Government Workers Hurt Country

A new poll conducted by a conservative research group found a plurality of registered voters holds an unfavorable view of government employee unions, and half believe that public-sector unions hurt the country.

"Voters split 35 percent favorable and 40 percent unfavorable on government employee unions, but the overall number masks sharp partisan differences," the Resurgent Republic survey reported Wednesday.

NPR CEO Vivian Schiller Resigns

CEO Vivian Schiller has resigned from her post at NPR, according to a radio announcement on NPR News radio broadcasts Wednesday morning.

Fox News: "The announcement comes a day after a hidden-camera video was released showing a senior NPR executive criticizing the tea party as "racist."
NPR condemned the comments, but the company announced Wednesday that the board of directors just accepted Schiller's resignation, "effective immediately."

David Rivera Calls Out Hillary Clinton on Cuba

Florida Republican U.S. Rep. David Rivera sent U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a letter on Wednesday, weighing in on the case of Alan Gross, who is in jail in Cuba. The Cuban government maintains that Gross was a spy, while his defenders insist that he was working on Internet projects.

Madame Secretary, being patient with a dictator is not a policy, wrote Rivera, a member of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee and a sharp critic of the Obama administrations handling of Cuban affairs.

Weather Looks Great for Space Shuttle Discovery Landing

Space shuttle Discoverys crew is packed up, ready for home and on schedule for Wednesday's expected 11:57 a.m. EST landing at Kennedy Space Centers Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF). According to NASA, the entry team of flight controllers has been in Houstons Mission Control Center since 4:30 a.m.

Capcom Charlie Hobaugh told Discovery Commander Steve Lindsey, The weather looks great. Winds, the only issue, are within limits for runway 15, the northwest to southeast runway at the SLF.

Scott Scores Rare Daily Double: Love from RPOF and TEA Party

It's not often that the Republican Party of Florida and the Florida TEA Party agree, but both organizations lavished Gov. Scott's State of the State address with praise Tuesday night.

Organizers Say Budget Protests Draw 10,000+ Statewide

An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 "Awake the State" demonstrators turned out in 30 cities across Florida on Tuesday to protest Gov. Rick Scott's budget plans.

In Fort Lauderdale, more than 1,000 protesters virtually encircled the federal courthouse downtown -- swamping a smaller gathering of tea party activists who were rallying in support of Scott.

"We were inundated," said Danita Kilcullen, a leader of Tea Party Fort Lauderdale. Kilcullen said some of her group's signs were "snatched" when the "Awake the State" crowd spilled over.

Obama Administration Appeals Health Care Ruling

After being prompted by U.S. District Court Judge Roger Vinson last week, the U.S. Justice Department has appealed a ruling declaring the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
