Gerard Robinson Takes Florida Education Helm

Virginia Education Secretary Gerard Robinson was selected Tuesday as the new education commissioner for the Florida Department of Education.

Robinson, one of five finalists for the position, was unanimously chosen by the five DOE board members. He has served as head of education in Virginia since last year, after being tapped by Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell.

Senate Candidate Ron Rushing Pushes the FairTax

Ron Rushing, a businessman who is running in a crowded Republican primary to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, appeared on the Ray Junior radio show (which is increasingly becoming one of the favorite forums for conservatives in Florida) on Monday night.

Rushing came out swinging for the FairTax.

Jon Huntsman Jumps in 2012 Race

Speaking in front of the Statue of Liberty on Tuesday in New Jersey, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman entered the Republican presidential primaries.

What we now need is leadership that trusts in our strength, said Huntsman in his speech.

The father of seven children, Huntsman --who remains unknown to many voters across the nation and has been consistently trailing in the polls --offered a stark picture for the need to cut federal spending.

Gov. Scott Backs Robinson as Education Commissioner

Gov. Rick Scott, who reportedly helped to push out former education commissioner Eric Smith, welcomed Virginia Secretary of Education Gerard Robinson as Smith's replacement Tuesday.

Robinson was unanimously selected by Department of Education board members, and Scott lauded his work expanding charter and virtual school opportunities for students in Virginia.

AHCA Wants More Time on Medicaid Pilot

With a June 30 deadline looming, discussions about continuing Floridas Medicaid pilot program appear headed to overtime.

The Agency for Health Care Administration sent a letter to the federal government Monday seeking a 30-day extension of the pilot, as state and federal officials try to reach agreement on continuing the program for three more years.

Phil Williams, AHCAs assistant deputy secretary for Medicaid finance, said the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requested the letter. He said extra time is needed to fine tune details of the agreement.
