Harry Reid Said It: 'Private-Sector Jobs Have Been Doing Just Fine'
In a Senate floor speech -- in which he defended his party's push for more government jobs -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid baldly declared on Wednesday: Its very clear that private-sector jobs have been doing just fine."
Republicans noted that the Democrat's statement came on the same day a new Labor Department report showed Washington, D.C., had surpassed Silicon Valley as the wealthiest metropolitan area in the country.

Mitt Romney Gets the Backing of Jeff Atwater
A day after Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam became the first state Cabinet officer to back a presidential candidate, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts unveiled the endorsement of Florida CFO Jeff Atwater on Wednesday. With the support of Putnam and now Atwater, Romney is the only Republican presidential hopeful to have the backing of leaders who currently hold statewide office in Florida.
Scott Appoints Maggard to Southwest Water Management District
Randall S. Maggard, vice president of Sonnys Discount Appliances Inc., has been appointed by Gov. Rick Scott to the Pasco County seat on the Southwest Florida WaterManagement District governing board.
The appointment requires senate confirmation.
Maggard, 48, served from 2003 to 2010 on the Coastal Rivers Basin board. He has also served as a member of the Zephyrhills Economic Development Council.
A graduate of Pasco-Hernando Community College, he succeeds Ronald E. Oakley.
If confirmed his term would be to March 1, 2015.

Rick Scott Still Charging Hard at Preparedness of University Grads
Rick Scott is showing he's no drive-by governor. When he questioned last week whether anthropology grads are prepared for the job market, it wasn't just something he posed to a Tallahassee luncheon crowd. He also sent a detailed list of questions to state university officials, asking for information on issues related to whether graduates are primed and ready to find a good job based on their education.

Is GOP Absorbing the Tea Party, or Is the Establishment Toppling?
Is the GOP co-opting the tea party movement, or are tea partiers taking down the establishment and sending the RINOs packing?
A lengthy New York Times magazine article this week quoted several establishment Republicans crowing over what they see as the demise of the two-year-old tea party activism.
Bill Kristol, the neoconservative editor of the Weekly Standard and a Fox News contributor, said the tea party peddles "an infantile form of conservatism."
Adam Putnam Thinks Free Trade Makes Horse Sense for Farmers
Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam will meet with a trade delegation from South Korea in Ocala on Wednesday night and insisted that the new free-trade agreement with that nation -- as well as deals with Colombia and Panama -- will help farmers in the Sunshine State.
Florida agricultural commodities are exported to more than 130 nations and 50 have agriculture-related imports of more than $10 million annually, said Putnam. The free-trade agreements will allow us to continue to focus on promoting Fresh From Florida commodities around the globe.

Audrey Gibson Sworn in as Florida Senator
Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, was formally sworn into office before the a full house of senators onWednesday.
"I really appreciate your taking the time to come out today to celebrate with me and my family," Gibson said to the other members in the Senate chamber.
She added that while her opening remarks are not supposed to be political, she noted that her mother has early stages of dementia. She hoped to have an "opportunity to deal with Alzheimer's and dementia" issues.

George LeMieux Calls Out Harry Reid and Bill Nelson
Former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, now running in a crowded Republican primary to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, called on the incumbent to reject comments by Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., that private-sector jobs were doing fine but public-sector jobs were in bad shape.
