Rick Perry Unveils 'Cut, Balance and Grow' Economic Package

Texas Gov. Rick Perry unveiled a "Cut, Balance and Grow" economic plan on Tuesday to slash federal spending, curb regulations and implement an optional 20 percent flat tax.

Calling for a balanced budget by 2020, the GOP presidential candidate would cap federal spending at 18 percent of GDP and reduce discretionary nondefense outlays by $100 billion in the first year.

The plan also bans congressional earmarks, ends baseline budgeting, curbs federal salaries and institutes "pay-go," requiring that any funding for new programs be offset by cuts elsewhere.

Buchanan, Nelson drive NASCAR racetrack tax breaks effort

U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, has proposed HR 3087, Motorsports Fairness and Permanency Act of 2011, that offers tax savings for construction on racetracks.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., is a co-sponsor of the Senate version, S 1174, which was filed in Juneby Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan.

Mitt Romney Brings Out the Big Guns for his Florida Team

On Monday, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts unveiled the organization that he hopes will lead him to victory in the Florida Republican presidential primary on Jan. 31.

Romney, who placed second in the 2008 presidential primary, announced that three Florida Republican congressmen -- Ander Crenshaw, Connie Mack and Tom Rooney -- would co-chair his efforts in the Sunshine State. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who endorsed Romney earlier in the month, will serve as the state chairman while Florida CFO Jeff Atwater will be the state finance chairman.

Herman Cain Leads Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul

Businessman Herman Cain leads the pack of Republican presidential candidates in a national New York Times/CBS News poll released on Tuesday morning. Cain takes 25 percent while former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts places second with 21 percent. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich takes 10 percent with U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas in fourth place at 8 percent. Gov. Rick Perry of Texas stands in fifth with 6 percent. The other candidates take 2 percent or less.

Rick Perry to Unveil Economic Plan; See It in Sunshine State News

Texas governor and GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry will unveil his economic plan Tuesday.

The plan, which includes a flat tax proposal, is scheduled to be released in the morning. Sunshine State News gets an advance look, and will share it in an upcoming story.

Man Who Emailed Threat to Rep. Snyder Gets a Year in Jail

A Massachusetts man who sent a threatening emailto a state representative leading last sessions immigration reform effort will spend a year in jail.

Manuel Pintado, whose email to Rep. William Snyder, R-Stuart, was sent an hour after a gunman in Arizona killed six and wounded 13, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, received the sentence on Monday for violating his probation, according to TCPalm.com.

Universities Tweak Plans for New Dental Schools

After two universities pitched a plan in September to open new dental schools in Florida, the unsatisfied governing board for the State University System told the universities to come back in two months with more information.

Their main critique was that neither plan sufficiently addressed the problem of how to bring more dentists to underserved, rural areas. A recent Department of Health study said the existing dental schools in Florida sufficiently meet demand and that dentists are needed primarily in rural areas.

Cain's Revised '9-0-9' Tax Plan Raises New Doubts

One of the chief complaints about Herman Cain's "9-9-9" tax plan is that money-hungry politicians could ratchet it up to 15-15-15, or worse.

So the GOP presidential candidate is going the other way, promising low-income Americans that their income tax rate would go to zero.

"Your plan isnt 9-9-9, its 9-0-9. Say amen, yall," Cain told a crowd in Detroit. "In other words, if you are at or below the poverty level then you dont pay that middle 9 on your income."
