Newt Gingrich Leads Mitt Romney and Ron Paul in Florida

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich continues to enjoy a healthy lead over the rest of the field for the Republican presidential nomination in Florida according to a NBC/Marist poll released over the weekend. Gingrich takes 44 percent of likely Republican primary voters in the Sunshine State while former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts places second with 29 percent.

Florida’s Board of Education Commends Scott’s Budget

The State Board of Education has issued a statement commending Gov. Rick Scott for prioritizing education in his recommended budget for 2012-2013.

Scott called on the state Legislature last Wednesday to boost primary education funding by $1 billion next year as he looks to make the rest of the 2012-13 budget 4.6 percent more efficient.

Newt Gingrich's Bush-Rubio Hire in Florida Leaves Tea Party Cold

Don't expect much tea party love for Newt Gingrich's Florida campaign director, Jose Mallea.

While media reports credited Mallea with engineering Marco Rubio's Senate victory in 2010, one tea leader called that revisionist history.

"He did not have a lot to do with Rubio coming from behind. The tea party did all the heavy lifting in the beginning. Then after he had a solid lead we could never talk to Rubio," said the activist who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Mitt Romney criticized Newt Gingrich on Saturday for proposing to eliminate child labor laws and end capital gains for high-income earners.

During a televised GOP presidential debate, Romney also skewered Gingrich's lack of experience in the private sector.

Gingrich riposted: "The only reason you didn't become a career politician is that you lost to Teddy Kennedy in 1984."

Gingrich received applause at the ABC News debate for his proposal to put poor students to work cleaning schools.

Ron Paul Sees Trouble When 'Government Protects You From Yourself'

Ron Paul cut through the rationales of Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich on health-care mandates Saturday night.

"You're in big trouble when you have government protecting you from yourself, and that's what they're doing," Paul said to enthusiastic applause at the ABC debate in Iowa.

"Why should we have a candidate who has to explain their position on this?" the Texas congressman and former Air Force physician asked.
