Online Holiday Sales Give National Unemployment a Little Boost

Unemployment dropped to 8.5 percent nationally in December, down 0.1 of a percentage point from November, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The new numbers record 13.1 million Americas reported as unemployed.

Rick Perry Raises the Stakes in South Carolina

After finishing in fifth place in the Iowa caucus on Tuesday night, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas surprised most pundits on Wednesday when he announced that he was staying in the race. Perry is planning to mostly ignore New Hampshire -- which holds it primary this coming Tuesday -- to focus on South Carolina which hosts its primary on Jan. 21.

In an email sent out to supporters late on Thursday, Perry clearly highlighted his commitment to doing well in the Palmetto State.

AAA Wants Florida Legislators to Ban Texting While Driving

AAA is backing bills to ban texting while driving, require booster seats for children through their fifth year and for legislators not to divert money from transportation projects to patch holes in the state budget for the upcoming legislative session.

Carroll to Address Commission on Jobs for Floridians with Disabilities

Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll will address the Governors Commission on Jobs for Floridians with Disabilities Friday morning.

The inaugural meeting of the commission -- created by Gov. Scott to advance job and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities in order to help those individuals achieve greater independence -- is set for 10 a.m. in Tallahassee.

Carroll is expected to address the commission at 10:10 a.m.

Palm Beach Moves to Slow Growth of Internet Cafes

Palm Beach County isnt waiting for legislators to act and taking action to slow the proliferation of Internet cafes into their own hands.

County commissions have voted to stop issuing business tax receipts for the arcades in unincorporated areas while a one-year moratorium is put in place, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Scott Sets Sights on Travel to Spain as Florida Approaches its Quincentennial

Gov. Rick Scott is once again making travel plans. This time the destination is Spain, Floridas 34th largest trading partner.

The excursion would mix business development with possible tourist development tied to the pending quincentennial of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon y Figueroas first expedition to Florida.

A spokeswoman for the governors office called the plans preliminary and deferred comment to Enterprise Florida.

It is an honor to congratulate General McKinley on his appointment to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Scott stated in a release. It is perfectly fitting that the National Guards first member of this esteemed military body is a native Floridian.
