Sheriffs, Election Supervisors Removed from Term Limits Effort

Term limits could be applied to county commissions, but not others elected countywide, under a bill proposed for the state Constitution that was backed by the Senate Community Affairs Committee on Monday.

This bill does not impose term limits. All this bill does is it says if a local county were to impose term limits then the Constitution would allow that, said Sen. Jeremy Ring, D-Margate.

The bill, SB 1070, would allow state voters to make the change to the state Constitution.

Lawyers, University Employees and Conflicts of Interest

January 29, 2012 - 6:00pm

There are silly bills and then there are the bat-crazy, dangerous, shoot-it-before-it-reaches-the-border bills. SB 1560 fits nicely into the latter category.

Time Running Out on E-Verify Bill at Florida Legislature

Time is running out on an E-Verify immigration bill at the Florida Legislature.

With just a week to clear three assigned subcommittees -- a virtual impossibility -- House Bill 1315 appears all but dead.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Port St. Lucie, would require employers to run the names of all new hires through the free federal E-Verify system to determine legal status.

Americans for Prosperity Taps Tea Party Volunteers for Tuesday

January 28, 2012 - 6:00pm

The conservative group Americans for Prosperity is signing up Florida tea party leaders to serve as regional coordinators, and paying groups $2 per signature to recruit Election Day volunteers.

"It's an opportunity for tea parties to raise dollars for their organizations by helping AFP with an awareness and membership drive on Tuesday," said Slade O'Brien, AFP's Florida director.

But critics say it looks suspiciously like a conservative version of ACORN, buying foot soldiers for election work.
