The Senate Judiciary Committee Monday backed a bill to replace how the student representative to the state Board of Governors is selected.

The bill, SB 1508, by Sen. Bill Montford, D-Apalachicola, would allow Gov. Rick Scott to appoint the student representative, rather than the Florida Student Association selecting a student body president from among the state universities.

Pam Bondi: Court Slapped Down Federal 'Overreach' on Florida Rivers, Streams

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a statement Monday in the wake of a federal court decision invalidating portions of the Environmental Protection Agency's rules governing water standards in the state's river and streams.

This ruling will give Florida an opportunity to enact rules to protect our streams without crippling our economy. Yet another instance of federal government overreach has been prevented," Bondi said.

Bondi had challenged the EPA's numeric nutrient criteria, which pre-empted Florida standards.

They'll Teach Occupy in College, How about the Tea Party?

This is a question I wish I'd thought of myself.

In response to a USA Today article last week regarding how some colleges are developing courses on the Occupy faux movement -- with tentative titles like "How to Change the World by Sleeping in a Park and Not Showering," and "Why Your Parents Are Racists Because They Don't Like People Who Look Like You" -- a letter-writer named Karen Hamers from Fort Pierce poses a question: Will they teach about the tea party, too?

February 19, 2012 - 6:00pm

Drawn out of his current district, U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns still figures to have an advantage in his re-election run this year.

Just don't tell that to fellow Republicans trying to knock him out in the party primary.

With 12 terms in office and $2.38 million in the bank, the veteran GOP congressman has the power of incumbency and money behind him.

And though his Ocala home is now south and east of the newly designed 3rd Congressional District, nearly 70 percent of his old district remains within the new CD 3.

FPL Urges PSC for New Natural-Gas Plant in Port Everglades

February 19, 2012 - 6:00pm

State regulators Monday heard arguments about whether Florida Power & Light should build a nearly $1.2 billion power plant that the company says will limit air pollution and help meet electricity needs in South Florida.

The plant would replace a 1960s-era facility at Port Everglades in Broward County and start generating electricity in 2016. The Florida Public Service Commission is considering whether to approve what is known as a "determination of need" -- a key step in the project moving forward.
