Senate Advances Bill to Reduce Number of Citizens' Policies

The Florida Senate on Monday advanced, with little debate, an effort to reform and reduce the number of policies held by state-backed Citizens Property Insurance.

Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, moved the bill, SB 1860, to a third and final vote noting the limit on time Monday and the desire for a number of senators seeking to debate the issue.

Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, has questioned the bill for allowing third parties, known as surplus-line carriers, to take over policies from the bloated Citizens.

John Ashcroft Backs Mitt Romney for President

Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft announced on Monday that he is backing former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts for the Republican presidential nomination. A veteran of Missouri politics, Ashcroft served as state auditor and attorney general of the Show Me State before two terms as governor and one as a U.S. senator. Ashcroft considered running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000 but decided to run for another term as a senator. After losing that contest, Ashcroft served as attorney general under George W. Bush.

An American Research Group (ARG) poll looking at the Ohio Republican presidential primary shows Mitt Romney with a solid lead over Rick Santorum in the Buckeye State -- unlike two other polls released on Monday that show a closer contest.

No-Fault Insurance Reform Bill Scheduled for Tuesday in Senate

The Senate has placed a bill to reform the states low-cost personal injury protection auto insurance on the special-order calendar for Tuesday.

The House and Senate are advancing vastly different bills to meet Gov. Rick Scotts goal to reform the fraud that has become a major part of the cost of the personal injury protection insurance.

Jeff Atwater Launches Website Directed at Senior Consumers

The office of Floridas Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater on Monday launched a new website intended to educate senior consumers about financial and insurance issues impacting the states fastest-growing population.

The site called On Guard for Seniors -- www.MyFloridaCFO.com/OnGuard -- has information about annuities, reverse mortgages, long-term care insurance and identity theft, as well as stories about seniors the Department of Financial Services has helped.

Rasmussen Poll: Santorum and Romney in Close Fight in Ohio

A poll from Rasmussen Reports released on Monday finds that Republican presidential hopefuls Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney are in a close battle in Ohio, which holds its primary -- with 66 delegates on the line -- on Tuesday.

Santorum takes 32 percent of the poll of likely primary voters while Romney is right behind him with 31 percent. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul are knotted together in a tie for distant third with 13 percent each. While 6 percent remain undecided, 3 percent say they will back other candidates in the race.

Romney, Santorum and Gingrich Close in Tennessee Poll

A poll from We Ask America released on Monday finds a three-way battle to win the Tennessee political primary on Tuesday. Three polls released on Sunday found Rick Santorum with a close lead over Mitt Romney in Tennessee. Polls released earlier in the month showed Santorum with a double-digit lead in the Volunteer State.

The poll of likely primary voters finds Romney with 30 percent and Santorum and Newt Gingrich right on his heels with 29 percent each. Ron Paul lags behind with 12 percent.

AAA: Florida Gas Prices Continue to Outpace National Average

Gas prices in Florida jumped another 5 cents, on average, as tensions with Iran continue.

The average gallon of gas in the Sunshine State stood at $3.80 as the week began, 4 cents higher than the national mark, according to AAA.

The issues affecting oil and gas prices are relatively the same as the past few weeks, with Iranian tensions dominating energy market headlines, Jessica Brady, AAA spokeswoman, stated in a release. As long as conflict surrounds Iran with the threat of blocking the Strait of Hormuz, were going to see elevated prices at the pump.

Mitt Romney Edges Rick Santorum in Q-Poll of Ohio

According to a poll released by Quinnipiac University, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has taken the lead in Ohio over Rick Santorum. Ohio, with 66 delegates at stake, is one of the biggest prizes up for grabs on Tuesday.

Romney takes 34 percent in the poll of likely Republican primary voters followed by Santorum with 31 percent. Newt Gingrich places third with 15 percent followed by Ron Paul with 12 percent.
