Florida Surgeon General Retiring to Care for Wife

Nearly a year after being appointed state surgeon general, Frank Farmer announced Monday he will leave the top job at the Florida Department of Health because his wife is battling breast cancer.

In a letter to Gov. Rick Scott, Farmer said his wife, Peggy, was diagnosed before Christmas and described her illness as a "life-changing event." Farmer said they decided he would stay in the surgeon general's job until Friday's end of the legislative session.

J.D. Alexander, Denise Grimsley Reach Compromise on Budget

The House and Senate budget chiefs, Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, and Rep. Denise Grimsley, R-Sebring, reached agreement on a fiscal plan Monday.

The full $70 billion spending plan, which will include money to break USF-Polytechnic in Lakeland into the states 12th university, will be released Tuesday.

By having the budget ready Tuesday, legislators will be able to cast final votes on the fiscal plan on Friday, the last scheduled day of the regular 60-day session.

The budget must also be signed by Gov. Rick Scott.

Newt Gingrich Looks Poised for Big Win in Georgia on Super Tuesday

With 76 delegates on the line, Georgia ranks as the largest prize at stake on Super Tuesday -- and it looks like favorite son Newt Gingrich is headed for a victory in the Peach State.

Gingrich has been leading in the polls of the state in recent weeks and two surveys unveiled on Monday show that the former House speaker is in store for a big win in the state he represented in Congress for two decades.

Adam Putnam-Supported Energy Plan Passes House in Landslide

By an overwhelming vote Monday, the Florida House of Representatives approved an energy plan championed by Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and designed to reduce the state's dependence on natural gas for its energy needs.

Rep. Denise Grimsley Says Budget Talks Soon to be Finalized

House budget chief Rep. Denise Grimsley, R-Sebring, expects the budget should be ready for printing Tuesday.

Grimsley just told the House that todays 4 p.m. budget meeting with Senate Budget Committee Chairman J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, should be the last one needed to put the approximately $70 billion fiscal plan together.

At that point well be able to go forward with the printing of the budget to have on the desk tomorrow to begin the 72-hour constitutionally mandated waiting period, Grimsley said.

Newt Gingrich Looks Set to Win Georgia, Poll Finds

An American Research Group poll released on Monday finds that Newt Gingrich, who represented the Peach State for two decades in Congress, is set to win Georgia -- the biggest prize on the map on Super Tuesday. There are 76 delegates up for grabs in the Georgia primary.

Gingrich leads the poll of likely voters with 44 percent followed by Mitt Romney in distant second with 24 percent. Rick Santorum takes third with 19 percent followed by Ron Paul with 9 percent, while 1 percent back other candidates and 3 percent remain undecided.

While Ohio received more focus from Republican presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum than the other nine contests up for grabs on Super Tuesday, a poll released Monday finds that Tennessee -- and its 58 delegates -- appears to be a close contest.

A poll from We Ask America released on Monday finds a three-way battle to win the Volunteer State's primary on Tuesday.
