Heath Plans Lining Up for State's New Medicaid System

Preparing for Florida's shift to a statewide Medicaid managed-care system, 20 health companies and organizations are interested in competing for contracts to serve seniors who need long-term care.

Potential bidders faced a deadline last week to submit nonbinding letters of intent that signaled their interest in the long-term care program, as the state Agency for Health Care Administration gets ready to move forward with a lengthy contracting process.

Broward Teachers Union VP Cops a Plea in Campaign Fund Scheme

Broward Teachers Union first vice president Bernie Schultz is the first to reach a deal with the Broward Sheriffs Office, several education blogs reported.

Schultz received probation for a single misdemeanor count of violating campaign contribution laws. Schultz had been reimbursed out of union dues for making a political campaign contribution.

Insiders expect more settlements shortly, since another 25 BTU employees, board members and their relatives received similar reimbursements for campaign contributions.

Republican insiders say Jeff Atwater's decision to stay out of the U.S. Senate contest means it's now Rep. Connie Mack IV's race to lose.

Some say Mack is doing a pretty good job of it.

Javier Manjarres, the Shark Tank blogger who broke the story that Atwater was "considering" a run, said the courting of the state's chief financial officer "showed that grassroots/tea party activists around the state are not convinced that either Congressman Connie Mack or former Senator George LeMieux can beat Democratic Senator Bill Nelson."

Regulators Help Finalize $500 Million Multistate Settlement with MetLife Insurance

MetLife Inc. may have to pay up to $500 million over its handling of death benefits from life insurance policies issued decades ago.

The deal, part of a multistate probe headed by Florida insurance investigators, also requires MetLife to improve its system for identifying unclaimed life-insurance policies.

Rick Scott Names Two More to Public Safety Task Force

The 17-member task force studying Florida 's Stand Your Ground law grew by two members Monday when the governor's office announced the appointment of two veteran law enforcement officers.

Joining the Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection are Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings of Orlando and David L. Perry of Tallahassee, chief of the Florida State University Police Department.
